488827 2006-10-03 07:28:00 HI all,

Just trying to clear up space on my hard drive and am having trouble trying to remove Norton Protected Recycle Bin. I installed it a few years back as part of the System Works suite and haven't really used it. When I found it was taking up 2.5GB on my HD I am keen to get rid of it. Inside the system Folder Recycler is a folder named NPROTECT which contains a lot of files. I have uninstalled Norton System Works completely and restarted, emptied the recycle bin to no avail. Also manually deleting them has no effect either. Any ideas?

488829 2006-10-03 08:43:00 Thanks Speedy,

I had done something similar to that already (maybe I cocked it up!) . Anyway it has no reference to Norton Protected Recycle Bin anymore . But the folder still exists . I managed to remove some of the files from the folder but some cannot be deleted .

The files match the following: xxxxxxxx . Where the x's are a series of digits and there appears to be no extension .

When I try to delete the files I get an error saying: Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk .

Is there something industrial strength out there that will forcibly remove these files as they are taking up a total of about 3GB?

488831 2006-10-04 19:40:00 Thanks Zqwerty,

I tried the program but it still didn't manage to get rid of it! I am at the point where I might try something drastic like booting from a linux distro on CD and deleting it that way just in case I've got something unfriendly. Only problem is the disks are NTFS so I have to find a way for Linux to read it.

My other more creative option is if I can move the files to a new partition and then reformat/delete the partition I might be rid of them. It could take a while though.

Is there a rootkit out there that hides in the Norton protected recycle bin (I think I remember reading). Or I probably just have a bug.

488832 2006-10-04 19:55:00 I guess you have tried View and tick hidden files while the folder is open. kjaada (253)

488834 2006-10-04 23:55:00 yeah I do have all files viewable in explorer and I can see the files I want to delete but when I select them and try to delete them I get an error saying the file doesn't really exist!

I did find that if I try to open the file in notepad it says the file doesn't exist but gives the option to create one with that filename. Which is good because it is then deletable but it seems that another file reappears... I'm suspicious.

I will try and get a bootable version of Xandros (hopefully it won't try and install itself) :)

488835 2006-10-05 00:26:00 Do you still have the SystemWorks Disk?

If so, you could try reinstalling it and then emptying the Protected Files before Un-Installing SystemWorks.

It is important that SystemWorks is Un-Installed no just deleted.

Remember, you can just turn off the Protection and run in Standard mode. ;)
