| 488582 | 2006-10-02 04:19:00 | Having some range issue's with a macbook pro. So far have tried a D-link G604T with booster antenna & a Belkin Mimo unit. For some strange reason the D-link had better range than the Mimo does. I will be taking another laptop around there to check and make sure it isn't just the airport card in the Macbook but we have been down that road & had the airport card replaced along with the logic board etc. so am pretty sure it's not that. We can't seem to get a decent signal in the lounge....roughly 10-15 metres away. the house is an early 80's house..mostly wood, no metal beams etc. only other devices i can thing may interfer is the microwave in the kitchen & the cordless phone, both I have had switched off & it makes no difference. What modem/router brand/model should I try next? Cheers KiwiMR2 |

I have tried moving it around in that room (cable is about 4 metres long though) up as high as the roof but not in the roof...especially when I had the booster antenna but it seemed to make no difference :( Cheers KiwiMR2 |

| 488585 | 2006-10-02 04:48:00 | Are you sure its a range problem? 15m should be easy with just about any AP, even the cheap ones. Use something like netstumbler to check the signal strength. Sometimes wireless gear can just be incompatiable, so check with another wireless client just to make sure the wireless chipset used in the mac is compatiable with your AP. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | ||

Yeah pretty sure.....Im going to take a laptop around & test it just to be sure though. Your right though.....I have used nemorous wireless setups & get much better range. I have the same setup at my place & my in laws place & we get much better range. They do work & work great up close but from far it's crap. The apple base station is just far to expensive & the airport express will mean a modem & then that where as I'd rather have a single unit. Cheers KiwiMR2 |

| 488587 | 2006-10-02 07:18:00 | KiwiMR2, I use a D-Link G604T without a booster and find it has a range of about 30 metres (even through a zincalume outer wall) and it has excellent reception. The aerial is placed at head height and Microwaves and mobile phones do not appear to have any ill effect on the network. Does this help? |

| 488588 | 2006-10-02 07:23:00 | I have the same router as you oldferix but id would love to know why the speed only averages 1.5mbps wireless and when i use ethernet its 3.2mbps.I can understand you dont lose speed with ethernet but why do you lose so much with a wireless router. | Hitech (9024) | ||
| 488589 | 2006-10-02 07:27:00 | Yeah I have the G604T and hooked my in laws up with one as well.....both of ours get that type of range. Despite Apple replacing heaps of the stuff in the Macbook Im thinking it must still be her laptop :( I think I'll have to jump across to some Apple boards and see what type of range the Macbook Pro's are getting in general :( Cheers KiwiMR2 |

| 488590 | 2006-10-03 03:12:00 | Id still wager a lazy 5'er on it not being a range problem. When people cant get their wireless networks to work they always seem to imediately assume its a range problem. You cant make any judgement calls when your only using one client to test. | Pete O'Neil (6584) | ||
| 488591 | 2006-10-03 04:23:00 | The wireless most definitly works, works well upto about 10 metres but over that it just drops away completly. I'll try using this netstumbler & see what results we get from that. I'll take a different laptop as well. Looking on the apple forums this looks like a pretty common issue with the macs & no apparent fix. Cheers KiwiMR2 |
