488502 2006-10-01 22:55:00 Ive been down this road before and didnt complete this action and years have passed and now this is an option again. different comps now and will be close together.

what i was wanting to know is, does anyone have a link to a good descriptive page to explain what steps, where and what im looking for?
nic cards? etc, and just tha basics of explaining what networking is and how to do it? what i need to know on my pc where and what items i will need if i dont already have them....

Please.... i have read some networking threads on here, but am not certain if either comp is able to do this, so need to find required settings.

Thanxs for the help.
Both XP as far as i know......sigh....... will check on this.

488503 2006-10-02 00:00:00 http://www.windowsnetworking.com/ is a good starting point..

You need a network switch, some network cards in those PCs, some network cable and to install/configure some stuff. And if you are going wireless, it is another story...

488504 2006-10-02 05:46:00 XP is the easiest version of Windows for networking.

All u have to do, is install the NIC's, connect the cable, get a xover cable ( if u dont have a hub).

Hook them up, then go to properties / internet protocol (TCP/IP) in my network places in XP, (under the LAN connection, and give each an ip address. (Dont leave either on obtain an ip address automatically, or use the network wizard). They're hopeless/useless.

And make sure both have the same workgroup name.

And if a firewall is installed on both (besides XP's), use the network wizard in the firewall to configure them, so both can share (if u share a folder), and both can get on the net.

488505 2006-10-02 09:32:00 two pcs? use a crossover cable, set one pc's ip address to 192.168.0.1 and the other to 192.168.0.2

if you have more than two compys or would like to use a switching hub (good if you have a dsl modem or combined modem/router. if using a hub/router you should be able to leave both pcs ip adresses on auto and tell the switch/router to use DHCP

my switching hub cost $25, and will automatically give out ip's, but i cannot configure it. it connects to my modem/router which is a dhcp server thingy. check the hub features to ensure it will meet your requirements. some switching hubs will detect if you are using a crossover or network cable and deal with it. others will only use network cable, and crossover to other hubs via uplink ports.

dont buy ANY cabling of dse. i suggest madkiwi (where i got my switch) or trademe.
