488592 2006-10-03 09:11:00 Seems netstumbler is not copatible with the wireless card in my MBP. I've downloaded the Air Traffic Control widget but it doesn't want to connect despite me using the correct WPA key :(

Cheers

Don't you hate that :annoyed:

Some wireless software will give you are readout of the signal strength . Some wireless cards are better than others with reception . I once went to a customers house . My laptop (with PCMCIA wireless card) would pickup the wireless signal ok, but his laptop with built in wireless would disconnect all the time, ok, it was borderline . Of course people don't realise that wireless has limitations .

488594 2006-10-03 10:24:00 I ended up trying I-stumbler on the mac side. Sitting right beside the router it gets a signal of 58-61, about 5-6 meters away it drops to around 28-30, another 6-7 metres into the lounge & it's down to about 12, can't really surf the net at that speed. Im convinced it is an issue with the mac book itself, there are soooooo many reports of the same issue online in the forums etc. even Apple acknowledge there is a fault there. Im pretty sure the heat the battery puts out isn't doing it any good....it sits directly above the airport card & gets so hot it burns your legs at times. I also tried heaps of other channels tonight but it made no difference.

I might try a netgear unit & see how it goes as regardless of the mac book issue the belkin is not as good as the D-link was.

488595 2006-10-04 01:48:00 The battery doesn't give out heat, unless it's on the verge of "venting with flame". The CPU might warm things up a bit.

Make sure that the antenna cable is properly plugged into the Airport card.

488596 2006-10-04 01:56:00 Im pretty sure the heat is coming from the battery.....in saying that I haven't noticed it swelling like the failing ones do. I have found out the airport isn't loacted under there anyway so can't be that.

I'll take a look but Im pretty sure it's all plugged up fine...probalem has existed prior to a new card & logic board installation.

I'll try another router :)

488597 2006-10-07 23:07:00 Well those who thought it was postitioning it looks like you might be right :)

I tested the unit here at home with me & I can get half way down the drive (a good 20 metres) in windows & still get 500-1000 kpbs speed so that's fine. I can about 5 metres less using the Mac OS. Apple guys.........why might that be??

So yeah, it's probably the location of the router.

I reakon I'll get them to get a powerpoint out in the hall way in the middle of the house so I can position it there. I guess they will have to get a network cable to run into the computer room so the desktop can stay hard wired. Should solve the issue hopefully.
