488765 2006-10-03 06:41:00 How to disable the CD-DVD ROM from others using it…Is it possible to do something in the control panel ( something like password protection) so that I can only use the CD ROM… sleuth (11045)
488766 2006-10-03 06:53:00 Put a password in Windows, and lock it when you're not there.

There might be an option in group policy. If u have XP Pro.

488768 2006-10-03 07:12:00 Go to start/run and type gpedit.msc

Go thru the options. See if u can find this option for enabling/disabling cd access. I dont know if its there or not.

And click on help/help topics for info

I dont use it myself.

488770 2006-10-03 07:28:00 Hmm according to the MS site (www.microsoft.com)

Q: How can I disable cd-rom on my workstations through a GPO?
A: Check out these two policy settings:

User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsWindows Explorer | Hide these specified drives in My Computer

And
User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesWindows ComponentsWindows Explorer | Prevent access to drives from My Computer

This is after running gpedit.msc

But it looks like this will disable access for all users not just guests.

488771 2006-10-05 23:19:00 you could always right click on said Optical drive in device manager and click disable - it will still open but wont show up in explorer - then just re enbale it when you need\want it - i do it all the time when my brother brings home a "game a mate downloaded for him" - and all of a sudden it wont go and he gives up :P MAC_H8ER (5897)
