488459 2006-10-01 19:49:00 In my Processes window I can find 8 instances of the above file which are increasing in number over time. I think this is the legitimate file and not a virus (with a similar name).

There are 4 under username "System", 2 under "Network Serive" and 1 with "Local Service".

Is this OK? Does it have any negative effects in Windows XP (sp2, Professional)?
Should I just ignore it?

488461 2006-10-02 03:59:00 I have 3.
It depends what services you are running.

Maybe I should have done a net search before posting :)
Thanks Vince :)

The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%\System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load.

Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.

488463 2006-10-02 21:38:00 It's pretty typical of Windows in that it doesn't give you any indication of what has spawned the extra process especially when it bugs your firewall for internet access.

It's a pain trying to figure out whether svchost should have access to the internet & on which ports.

cl BLACK VIPER'S SERVICES CONFIGURATION

At bottom table under Process Name are stacks of entries for svchost.exe

Enjoy.

488465 2006-10-03 11:02:00 I've got two running and not one going through my firewall.. If you kill off all unneccessary services you can eliminate most of them. mikebartnz (21)
