489466 2006-10-06 02:26:00 Hi,I am trying to establish a network between my desktop and a laptop and XP Pro network wizard cant establish a connection. I am using a router and the internet works fine on both machines. oOn the laptops My net work places shows both computers, but clicking on the icons shows that access is denied.
The desk top doesnt allow me to view work group computers. Going to the control panel on the desktop the hardware device manager shows a amt network controller that is not working. Any attempts to reinstall drivers fails.

Any ideas as to the problem. Thanks.

489467 2006-10-06 03:38:00 Dont use the Wizard, its hopeless, go to My network places, and properties / TCP/IP under the LAN connection. And enter the ip addresses in manually.

If it says its not working it maybe faulty.

Is it showing a X or ! in device manager?

489470 2006-10-07 01:04:00 So if the crucial network controller is not working, how is it that both can share the Internet and the laptop can see both computers? Exactly what network controller is showing the problem? Whatever it is, it can't be vital to your problem.

An access denied message implies that it can see the resource but you don't have the right credentials (permission) to access it. Rather than try to imperfectly reinvent the wheel, go to this site and take it from there.

It would be wise to save whatever you can on to floppy and rewipe your machine asap.

489473 2006-10-07 17:47:00 I was caught out once with same problem about access denied. Reason was that even though the wizard created the network - on both machines I actually didnt share any folders. Right click on shared folder (or any folder you want to share) and click share and security.... Once permission granted reboot both machines.
