489414 2006-10-06 10:00:00 Depends what you are doing, for the average home user (word, net etc) you will not notice anything, but if you are a gamer or benchmarker, you will notice a little bit of difference with the latencies and overclocking abilities. The_End_Of_Reality (334)
489415 2006-10-06 10:45:00 definetly get a better graphics card. 3GB of ram is pretty silly for a gaming rig if you are to use a 7300 for graphics. try a 7600GT or higher. I beleive my 6600GT is faster than a 7300.

personal experience teaches me that (especially) when using dual channel ram keep everything identical. it's just easier.

489416 2006-10-06 11:27:00 im upgrading from a 6600gt, to that better video card . toms hardware highly sugestted my new one for the price . and the cosiar is extra ram from my last computer . I dont need to use it, i just though i might as well if it will give me a boost in power? i just like to have a better computer then most people . and im kinda on a budget, and sence im playing my 360 alot now and not my computer ill wait a few months for a sweet video card, the one im ordering should get me by .

using a tv tuner tends to kill at least 512 ram . solidworks(engineering/3d design) uses alot .

i am a benchmarker, and i just cant stand that my roomate has a better computer than me and its a labtop .

489417 2006-10-06 15:13:00 any more then two is a waste, even the dream machine gaming pc has only two gigs, anymore then that puts a strain on your voltage rails and is unused really anyways, unless you plan on having 3 or more computer games open made within the last 3 years you won't need it, trust me, just get two gigs, 1 gig + 1 gig of the same stick and if your mobo supports it you can dual channel getting a 30% performance boost DigitalMessiah (7649)
489418 2006-10-06 15:16:00 thanks
i should be able to run dual channel
but if i decide to try and run all 4 sticks, can i run them both in dual channel some how?

489419 2006-10-06 18:54:00 When I run FEAR alone, sometimes I only have 10% free RAM and then there are my video encoding/converting programs that love to use the RAM to 5% free... but that is what I use my PC for...

Yes, the mobo manual will say which slots are for dual channel, just drop the RAM in them and it will run in dual channel.

That is stupid, what is the point in competing who has the best PC, I have a... well he is not really a friend because he does that, brags about his PC when it is not all that great and his parents paid for it... infact most people I know around him dislike him due to this. If you want a good PC, but get it for the rights reasons, the performance, not to brag or it is a waste of money and you won't appreciate the PC as much

Yes it will run in dual channel mode as long as you having matching PAIRS of RAM.

Cheers

i know someone EXACTLY like that, there's 5 nerds in my group including him. we all gradually caught up to him, and as soon as nerd number 4 was building a better rig he got his parents to pay for him to build a slightly better one. he then looks at our pcs and disseds the fps etc when they are only slightly lower than ours. also, ever since he got an lcd monitor (parents paid for, back in 2002) he's claimed crt give him headaches and refuses to use them. had he even a job to try and pay it wouldnt be so bad, but he dusnt even pay for is own petrol and again refuses to drive anything that isnt a citroen (but thats another story)

back to his rig, his parents werent going to pay for the new one, so he tried to sell off their one (to be replaced by his old one once the new one was ready) on TM. he had $1 reserve and started a new account to bail him out if it didnt reach the amount he wanted, being twice that of the value of the pc. eventually he got his self employed mum to use her business to get him a new rig and swapped it for his old one. talk about desperate. also, for the short while he was on the bottom rung he would just make excuses about how good for its age his rig was while we all waited for it to load new maps etc at lans, or we got a bit of revenge because he couldnt run certain games at max.

he also refuses to accept gmail is NOT crap, and himself will only use yahoo (go figure). him and another friend also beleive norton is THE antivirus and all others are completely inneffective. their loss personally, but still a pain at lans when norton kicks in deciding it isnt quite using enough ram

/rant

only useful comment: with 3GB of ram you should be able to run norton... would be cheaper to just not buy the extra sticks though

good on you for waiting for prices to come down before buying the graphics, but why then buy the 7300 in the first place for only a marginal performace increase? (which i can not be bothered checking up on to dispute;))

lol, imagine what a typical post on a 100% stereotypical australian forum would be like.
