Have you enabled the "Microsoft Network Client" in the ME machines ControlPanel/Network pages. If you don't get the logon window (andgive it a password) at boot time which that provides, I think it doesn't network very well. :) As you say, it will be a simple thing. They are the very worst. :badpc: |

What I had to do was not just enable File Sharing but also enable full access . Read Only didnt work on Ethernet but worked fine on Parallel Cable . This may explain why I could see everything but not touch anything . There is another issue that I havent got my head around yet and that is the length of filenames . I have read where if youre networking 95/98/ME computers with XP, filenames over 12 characters become an issue . I guess that is 8 characters plus a dot and 3 character extension DOS style . Quite whether that is whats stopping me dragging from ME to XP I doubt, however until I find another solution itll have to do . :D Anyway, Ive shifted a file that was going to take 267 minutes on Parallel Cable in 15 minutes on Ethernet so Im quite pleased with myself . Can anyone tell me if a USB Crossover Cable is any quicker or easier? Yes Ive got Microsoft Network Client enabled Graham but I didnt give it a password . Hmmm, I wonder? Well even though Ive done what I set out to do Im still working on things to see if I can sort out the correct way to go about this procedure from scratch . Im surprised how little useful information there is on the Internet regarding this matter . |

Dont think it matters about length of filenames tho as I dont have problems with names over 12 characters. USB cable needs to have drivers installed but other wise its similar to ethernet. If ethernet cards are in both pcs its best to use them. |
