489220 2006-10-04 21:56:00 Hi, welcome to PressF1!

Is this the password for Windows or a bootup/hard drive password?
If it's a windows password what version of Windows is it?

489221 2006-10-04 22:10:00 How would we know whether this is not one of the thousands of laptops stolen every year? Scouse (83)
489222 2006-10-04 22:39:00 For BIOS password clearance you must take the laptop back to the service agent, with proof of ownership.

There is no other way.

If its a HDD password a new HDD will also be required in addition to the above.

This is the case with almost every laptop maker now, to deter theft.

489223 2006-10-04 22:41:00 Power-on boot passwords are good like that. Forget it, lose it, steal it, the laptop becomes a paperweight.

The "regular" laptop user would remember it

489224 2006-10-05 06:28:00 See if you can find a local geek to reset it. Generally if you have to ask it will take much too much time and frustration to get it all to work. The easiest way is by using the chntpw utility from a Linux live CD but you also need a version with captive NTFS utilities for most Windows desktops.

If this is a BIOS password, which is unlikely as most users don't have them, you can clear out the BIOS memory on many motherboards by attaching a jumper to the correct place when you boot it. You would need to find the documentation for your motherboard which probably has instructions.

489226 2006-10-05 08:56:00 I got past a BIOS password by manipulating the LPT1 port on the back. Lovely Satellite CDS Laptops. trinsic (6945)
