489106 2006-10-04 04:28:00 I’m trying to transfer some files from a ME Computer to a XP Computer via Direct Cable Connection.

The ME Computer is set up as the host because it has the files I want to transfer to the XP Computer and of course the XP Computer is the Guest.

All goes well and I’m assured by both computers they are connected, but I can’t view the files on the ME (Host) Computer. I don’t even have a View File Button on the XP (Guest) Computer.

I’ve enabled file sharing on the Me Computer for the HDD and Folder containing the files I wish to transfer. Further, XP advises that I’m connected at 4mbs.

I’ve achieved this type of transfer many times between 95/98/ME computers but I’m afraid I’m not at all familiar with XP.

What ever am I missing? :help:

489108 2006-10-05 00:14:00 Thanks Mandy, I tried all those links along with about a 1000 others on Google but no luck.

The two computers claim to be connected but I can't see any files even though I've turned on File Sharing, I've disconnected the XP Firewall, I've tried swapping the Host & Guest Computers but no luck.

Has anyone out there ever got the Direct Cable Connection facility to work between XP & ME?

489110 2006-10-05 03:38:00 Thanks GF I had read that link, well, 99.9999999% of it. :D

The very last move was what I was missing. There is no “View Host” facility on XP, you must go Start/Run and type in \\Host computer name\Folder etc. Don’t forget the double backslash.

As a matter of interest, whilst Googling, I even found articles stating XP would only work with XP because XP didn’t support the NetBEUI or IPX/SPX protocols used by 95/98/ME.

Anyway, I can see the Host Computer now so let’s see if I can transfer anything. :D

489111 2006-10-08 00:54:00 After the struggle to get an XP Computer to talk to a ME Computer via a Parallel Crossover Cable I decided the transfer of files was a bit slow, so I’d try to do the same thing via an Ethernet Crossover Cable .

Well, after a right struggle I’ve got the ME Computer seeing all the shared folders and files on The XP Computer but the snotty XP Computer refuses to see the Files & Folders on the ME Computer .

Needless to say the files I wish to Copy and transfer are on the ME Computer .

Anyone any ideas before XP becomes Xtinct . :help: :badpc:

489112 2006-10-08 01:05:00 Why can't you copy and paste the files from the ME PC, to the XP PC if you have access in that direction? (i.e. push the files, don't pull the files?) godfather (25)
489113 2006-10-08 01:40:00 I don't know if it will make any difference, but XP and ME use different default "Workgroup" names. ME uses WORKGROUP. Graham L (2)
489114 2006-10-08 02:45:00 Hi,
Check that a firewall isnt blocking acess. Also that xp has a shared folder enabled.

489115 2006-10-08 08:02:00 Good thinking GF, but whilst I can see the files, I cant open them or copy and paste .

Yep, found that one Graham and they’re both MSHOME, which I think is the XP default .

Good point Mandy so I turned the firewall off completely and really offended XP .

Anyway, I found an article on the Internet that recommended changing the IP Address on one computer to 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 . and the other to 192 . 168 . 0 . 2 . Now I can see the files and folders perfectly but can’t open or copy anything .

The problem I feel is dead simple, but this is the first time I’ve had anything to do with Ethernet or XP so It’s quite a learning curve . And character building too I might add! :D
