490168 2006-10-08 20:44:00 I installed fedora core 3 as a second system (1st is win xp) to check it out on my asus laptop. it uses grub 0.95 as the dual log manager. i got diapponited and wanyed to uninstall fedora, but grub is causing a lot of problems. I reformatted 2 partition with fedora installtions but grub is still there and does not let me get to my win xp. where is grub installed and how can i get rid of it? anaroo (5044)
490169 2006-10-08 22:44:00 Grub is still installed within the MBR (not on the partition FC3 was installed to).

Put your Windows CD in, make sure optical drive is set as first boot device. Reboot
Select R whn it asks you.. fill in any admin password (or just enter if none). When you get to console, type 'fixmbr' (without the ' '). Reboot; voila

490171 2006-10-09 04:14:00 MBR is the Master Boot Record. It is where GRUB writes the boot loader files.

Fedora Core 3 is old to use, they are just about to release Core 6 . :)

I rolled out a Linux server tonight on FC3. Runs sweet. Mind you, its a server with no GUI.

490173 2006-10-09 21:23:00 Can I ask why you got disappointed with it?

Fedora is the distribution I like to run, currently I run FC5 and FC6 should be out sometime this month I think.

Hopefully the experience you had will not set you back from not giving Linux another shot though.

Cheers,

KK

490175 2006-10-14 00:32:00 Thanks all for the help. i deleted grub from mbr using win2k os disc rather then xp os disc as asus laptops do come with recovery discs which do not offer this option. anyway it worked. thanx anaroo (5044)
