| 490008 | 2006-10-08 03:42:00 | I'm having one of my "I want to try out Linux" phases again, so I installed openSuSE 10.1 on a virtual machine, using Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 (free). Now everything works, and I'm liking it quite a lot, but I can't seem to get the networking working. The help says that the virtual machine will emulate whichever adapter you have selected, as a DEC 24114 or something along those lines. That part of it is fine - SuSE detects that - but it doesn't detect that it's connected. So I can't connect to the internet. I have tried the same thing with a WinXP virtual machine, and the network works without any config, so it seems to be a SuSE issue. I know that MS doesn't support Linux on their VM's, but in saying that, I've read (after doing a google search) that people haven't had any issues with it. Anyone have any suggestions?? |

There is a T icon down the bottom left of the virtual machine window that is your network connection indicator. You may also have to install the addins ( I think thats want there are called, Im on the wrong machine at the moment) dont worry they come with the download but by default are not installed. To do this have your virtual machine going then if I remember correctly the option to install these addins is in the advanced menu. Also check in in the network connections area of your pc you should have a virtual microsoft network card, basicly that is the bridge between the virtual machine and the real network card on your machine. Ill check my setup later and post back any additional information |

| 490010 | 2006-10-08 06:11:00 | Thanks beama. I've checked the settings, and it has the network thingy in the LH corner etc. The frustrating thing is that SuSE detects the "network card" simulated by Virtual PC, but it doesn't realise that the network is connected. I tried exactly the same settings with my WinXP VM, and that's works perfectly fine (it even activated over the internet). I'll wait to hear from you re: your settings. |

| 490011 | 2006-10-08 06:48:00 | just checked my settings and not all pc's have the virtual nic, my work pc does my laptop doesn't with the virtual machine running goto... edit...settings click on the "networking" label in the right pane your network card should be listed to install addins goto the "action" menu Try ifconfig eth0 from a terminal window in Suse you may have to use su, tell us the results I know suse works in m$ virtual machine as I managed to use it and suse to login into a novell network (Frustration levels were high that day but you could hear the OH YEA everywhere once I suceeded) I think you may have to install the M$ addins for the virtual machine |

| 490012 | 2006-10-08 07:59:00 | I've run OpenSuse 10.1 on the same version of MS Virtual PC and the network worked without any configuration. Unless changes have been made to Suse's configuration the problem is most likely to be outside the VM, where our systems are almost certainly different. Please could you tell us: 1. How is the network set up in Microsoft Virtual PC? Is it bridged to the network card you're using? Please double check that it is enabled. 2. What type of router are you using? I know the DSL502T router that comes with Xtra packages has issues with IPv6, which OpenSuse 10.1 uses by default. 3. When you say "it doesn't detect that it's connected", how can you tell this? Does it show the networkmanager's attempts to connect when you disable and re-enable the network? Where does this process stop? |

The "Networking" setup is set up to use my network card. When I try "ifconfig eth0" it says "ifconfig: command not found". Is this supposed to happen? I'll try the VM Addins. TGoddard: 1. Does it show the networkmanager's attempts to connect when you disable and re-enable the network? Where does this process stop? 1) network card set up to use my Broadcom wireless card (laptop). This is the same setting which I have for my WinXP VM, and my Ubuntu VM, and both work fine without any additional configuration 2) I'm using Linksys WRT54GL using DD-WRT firmware (this is wirelessly). 3) Basically the network manager says that "No network devices found", while the setup in YaST detects the hardware, and installs drivers for it. It is also set up to use DHCP, as the help file in MS Virtual PC suggests. How do you disable/re-enable the network? I can't seem to find out how to do it. I think you might be onto something re: IPV6. How can I change this in SuSE? Cheers, somebody |

| 490014 | 2006-10-08 23:33:00 | Hi, not sure if its the same issue, but I have issue with the Broadcom NIC and Vista which uses IPv6...Maybe that NIC! | SolMiester (139) | ||
| 490015 | 2006-10-09 01:24:00 | Just an update for those who might be interested - I don't actually know what I did, but it's now working. Still not sure how I did it, or what the problem was. Cheers for your suggestions anyway. |

| 490017 | 2006-10-09 19:02:00 | great to hear thats its working This proberly happened because you run this command without using su or logged in as root I found out from a linux friend of mine that the paths haven't been defined, so you have to navigate to /sbin and then go ./ifconfig for it to work. Thanks for your help beama. |
