490018 2006-10-08 03:27:00 This computer continuously reboots by itself while attempting to load Windows. Have tried F8 to start in safe mode, last known good options, etc but the restarting attempts continues. I suspect its because of virus infection. I've got AVG installed but since I can't start Windows, I can't run antivirus scan. What shall I do, other than taking out the HDD and put it in another PC to scan and remove the virus?

Is there a software (anti-viurs) which I can boot up my PC and run the scan and removal?

OS: XP Pro SP2

490019 2006-10-08 03:33:00 Try (on another PC) to install Windows (any version 95+) to a CD or DVD and install a virus scanner. Then scan the hard drive. Or try scanning with a proper boot CD. pcuser42 (130)
490020 2006-10-08 03:45:00 Did the PC restart after SP2 was installed? Did u install SP2 recently?

If u did, did u scan for spyware/malware, before u installed SP2?

SP2 was installed quite sometime ago. I did not scan for spyware/malware before installing SP2

490022 2006-10-08 03:57:00 SP2 was installed quite sometime ago. I did not scan for spyware/malware before installing SP2

And how long ago was that? More than a week / a month ago?

Is or was XP up to date?

I've read that XP will reboot if its got spyware on it, before SP2 is installed, or if the CPU is a Prescott, and the patch for this isnt installed.

Your CPU isnt a P4 Prescott is it?

490023 2006-10-08 04:25:00 Can't really remember how long ago. Probably 3 -6 months. The CPU is indeed Prescot.

Do I have to perform a clean install of XP??

No. don't think I ever installed this patch.

Remembered pretty well that SP2 installation went fairly smoothly without any hassle.
