489949 2006-10-07 20:56:00 I cannot get my DVD player to read discs.

I am running 2000 Professional.

When the disc is in the 'busy' light comes on, but nothing else happens. If I click on 'my computer' it opens a window, but nothing shows, not the C drive or my documents or anything. Only way I can get the disc out is to push a bent paperclip into the little hole on the front, then I have to restart the PC or it eventually crashes.

It's a cheaper DVD player, internal, HR344 BTC DVD 16/48x is all I have on paperwork from when I bought it.

Any suggestions?!

Thanks!

489950 2006-10-07 22:35:00 Have you got more than one drive , you might have connected it as the slave instead of the master, there is a little switch at the back of the drive you will need to check you have set the right one ,it should exsplain about that in your manual you got with your drive chirpy (11260)

Yeah, have a CD writer too, although both were working for years, and now the DVD player will not.

Will open up the tower and see if there is a wee switch - dunno where the manual is, long gone I think!

489952 2006-10-08 07:57:00 If they were working fine before then the drives are conneced correctly, you could try going into device manager and see if you have any yellows by your idle(drive name) if you have click properties to see what is says is wrong, have you deleted any files by mistake) or installed a new software that conflicts? chirpy (11260)

Nah, no yellow triangle.

Can't remember deleting or updating anything I shouldn't have either.

Could it be as easy as a dirty DVD laser? The drive doesn't make any noise, doesn't spin the disc, just reads as busy.
