489740 2006-10-07 04:34:00 Hi all,

I have two computers, both running XP, connected to a Dynalink RTA770 router. One is using Sygate firewall, and the other is using Windows firewall.

I've been trying to set them up as a network, but it hasn't gone smoothly. Both are connected to the router, and each can access the Internet.

When I ping the Windows Firewall-protected computer, no problems. I can also view shared files etc. However, when I ping the sygate-protected computer from the Windows firewall-protected computer, there's no response - request timed out. No shared files or printers visible either. if I disable the Sygate firewall, no problems. So....

How do I configure Sygate to allow it to be accessed by the second pc?

Cheers

489741 2006-10-07 04:55:00 Firstly, use ping or msconfig to find out the IP address of the Windows firewalled machine, it should be something like 192.168.0.3 (only the last digit should be different).
On the machine with Sygate installed:
1. Double click on the Sygate arrows at bottom right taskbar. Sygate Personal Firewall should come up.
2. Go to Tools/Advanced Rules.
3. Hit Add and give your rule a name like Windows firewall machine.
4. Hit Hosts and click on the IP addresses radio button and type in the IP address you found above.
5. Click OK.

Now your Windows firewalled machine will be allowed through the Sygate firewall. If you have other machines on your network, you can add their addresses to the same rule by typing a range like this 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.187
Note: it has nothing to do with the Windows firewall. Even if that machine had Sygate installed, you would still have to do what I've described above, but you'd have to do it on both machines.

Works like a charm. Thanks very much

Speedy - thanks for the suggestion. In every other respect I'm happy with Sygate, but I'll keep it in mind if I decide to change.

Cheers
