490417 2006-10-09 22:03:00 Hi

I'm currently on Ubuntu Linux and I would like to try out Puppy Linux. I downloaded it onto my USB flashdrive and I would like the computer to load the USB drive on bootup.

I am not sure how to configure the system to do that...

490418 2006-10-10 00:36:00 If you just "downloaded" it to the USB device, it's probably not bootable. :( Just like copying a ".iso" file to a CD as a file, that can't work. It must be written as an image, so it creates the boot sector and a complete filesystem. Doubtless the site you downloaded it from gave full instructions. ;) Making a bootable Linux floppy from an image file uses dd or rawrite; dd would probably work on a USB, and I suppose there's a rawrite equivalent for USB.

Then, you just need to use whatever means your machine's BIOS provides for selecting the boot order in SETUP, or a particular device at boot time.

I can't seem to access BIOS...

490420 2006-10-10 01:45:00 That's a hardware problem, not a Linux one. :D Try F1, F2, F10, or F12 at the start of boot. Sometimes holding a key down "permanently" during the boot can cause a keyboard error and let you into the BIOS setuip. Graham L (2)
