| 1407739 | 2015-09-01 22:50:00 | Hey everyone, When my brother and I moved into our own place about a month ago, we got connected with Bigpipe's VDSL service. Right from the beginning we've been getting rather slow line speeds, (I have been in back and forth contact with Bigpipe and they have confirmed the speeds are slower than they expect as well), around 10Mbps down, 7Mbps up. Bigpipe have been getting me to do all sorts of tests on it and they've now logged a fault with Chorus, so a tech is due to come and have a look tomorrow. Being that it's our own place, I want to make sure that it gets sorted out good and proper (I'm in Papakura - not due to get Fibre for a couple of years at least :)), so I was just wanting to know what questions should I be asking the Chorus tech? And what should I be looking out for/things to make sure they do? Thanks for your input everyone, Sam |

Chances are that will fix the issue. If you already have a master splitter, then hopefully Chorus should be able to sort it out. If you give the chorus guy muffins or something and be really really nice to him he might even install a splitter for you, if it's an easy job. I wish it was mandatory for a master splitter to be installed with all VDSL installs. Punch your address into www.broadbandmap.co.nz and see what your expected speeds are. |

Thanks for that info - helpful to know. Now after reading through that, it explains why they didn't send out a tech when we signed up (going by the info online, most other ISPs would send out a tech to connect your line if changing to VDSL, and Bigpipe's connection fee was lower than others as well. Having said that though, I don't want to bag Bigpipe just yet, their support has been pretty good so far (fast response to emails), we'll just see how things go when the tech gets here. |

Master splitter - normally lives in the demarc box on the outside of your building. You'd also normally have a jackpoint wired up in the house specifically for the modem, and you wouldn't need filters on your phones. Demarc box 6726 Splitter 6727 |

| 1407744 | 2015-09-02 00:56:00 | It all comes down to the quality of the line, your house wiring, and the distance from the cabinet/ exchange. The expected speeds Wratterus linked are usually pretty close so if you are a lot different something is wrong. As an example for Spark customers on VDSL they rewire the house, the standard they use is a master splitter and a cat5 cable to an RJ45 outlet dedicated to the modem. If you are using plug in filters and sharing an outlet with a phone you may get degraded service which is why spark won't do that. Also don't confuse speedtest results with sync speed, make sure you are looking at the actual connection speed on the modem when comparing to the expected speeds. If you are synching at for example 20Mbps+ and speedtest is under 10 then it's not your connection it's further up the chain. At home I get 24Mbps down and 10 up and I'm 666m (:) actually it's 667 but...) from the cabinet. Speed test usually gives me around 20-21 down and 9.5-9.8 up Over approx 900M speeds drop off rapidly. |

| 1407745 | 2015-09-02 01:17:00 | Ok I'll have a look for that when I get home tonight. There's 3 phone jacks in the house (1 in the lounge, 1 in the kitchen, 1 in the master bedroom) - the one in the lounge had no connection when I plugged the modem into it, but the other 2 jacks worked, I've just got the modem on the kitchen one at the moment. (Not sure if the lounge jack works for a phone either as I haven't tested it - we don't have a landline). But no dedicated modem jack anywhere. Yeah that link said I should be expecting 15-60Mbps down, 5-18Mbps up. And I've checked the sync speed on the modem as well - that's giving the same speeds I mentioned in my 1st post. I'm not sure where the nearest cabinet is, haven't gotten round to looking for it yet :) |

| 1407747 | 2015-09-02 03:15:00 | I've got a Draytek Vigor 130, I don't know if they're any good but I just wanted a VDSL one that I could hook up to our Netgear router | Sam Bos (12456) | ||
| 1407748 | 2015-09-02 03:59:00 | They are good modems. You don't have a master splitter installed by the sounds, get the Chorus tech to put one in when they visit. | Alex B (15479) | ||
