1397961 2015-04-04 04:49:00 two things prevent them in the first place:

Screens

Wind - no wind? Turn the fans on.
They hate it.

1397962 2015-04-04 08:27:00 I have thought about putting overhead fans in my place to help keep the place cooler in summer. In Singapore we used fans in our rooms to keep the air circulating and cool. I remember sometimes at night we had flying ants swarming around outside - the one thing that kept them away and outside was the wind created by the fans. Bobh (5192)
1397963 2015-04-04 16:34:00 When I lived in South Africa we had a product called Doom. It was seriously deadly to all undesirables. I guess the chemicals used aren't "politically correct" here in Godzone. Greg (193)

You clearly didn’t use enough of it given the number of undesirables still running rampant over there. :D

Ditto with that Richard, he is a good lad.

1397967 2015-04-05 09:05:00 Thanks to a variety of flyscreens over main doors and windows we've had a charmed run with flys.

However, for some years now ants have been a reall issue.

Initially I thought we had the bigger, more aggressive Argentinian Ants. These had a natural die-back across NZ and were replaced by our smaller, less bitey native ants, but we've still got the occasional example of a huge nest - either in the wall space, or under the floor in the least accessible part of the underside of the house.

One room has a small scattering of explorer ants most of the time, and on occasion, whether drawn by food / rubbish / flowers, or driven inside by heavy rain, we get very thick, strong lines of ants.
The last lot were streaming in through an unused power socket.

They are very bait-shy.

Raid Ant Sand just gets ignored competely.
Neverong, the old gold standard for killing the buggers only attracts about a fifth of the ant trail, and after 3 days they ignore it entirely.

The surface sprays have a very limited working life when outdoors or in areas that get plenty of sun (the affected rooms are north facing).

One product that really knocks them back for ages is a 'Woolworths' product in a 2 litre container, with a battery powered spray nossle. Once this is on a surface you won't see another ant until some time after rain has washed it away.

This stuff has largely finished off the hardcore pockets on the south side of the house, with only a few applications to the outside perimeter, with only the north side still remaining a recurrent problem.

I'd love to get some product directly onto this nest, as it's been a long term annoyance.

1397968 2015-04-05 10:14:00 Mortein 'Fast Knockdown' (odourless) drops a blowfly in about 15 seconds, but you see the effects sooner because the fly's wing coordination is lost almost immediately and it begins to lose control of its flight.

Mortein also make a 'Crawling Insect' spray that has an effective life of several days, perfect for dealing with crawling insects including spiders, cockroaches and bedbugs. RAID also has a similar product.

Ants are best contolled via liquid ant bait. You pour a small amount into a milk bottle cap and refresh it as required, no need to take out the dead ants, ant-family members often take them back to the nest where they kill even more ants. Place caps on two or three ant-trails and top up as required. It takes a few days for the ants to discover all loaded ant killer sites so dont be discouraged. We use RAID liquid ant killer (in the red plastic squeeze bottle). It has never failed to eradicate the current nest and gives us several ant-free months.

1397969 2015-04-05 11:23:00 I used to buy Pyrethrum powder & dissolve it in lighting kerosene, this would be sprayed with a 'FLIT' gun. I don't know if you can get the powder any more. It is harmless to Humans & Animals. Fly screens are the answer. mzee (3324)
