1398551 2015-04-15 06:31:00 the computing paradigm has shifted from the desktop to the phone/tablet/cloud/what ever device I prefer to use department. You cant lump all that in one group, they are all totally different.

While people may not be buying as many computers as they used to, Tablets phones etc are NOT going to replace real computers any time soon..Ever tried to run cloud storage for thousands of people from a Tablet -- Not going to happen. Love to see a tablet run 1 PB of storage (1024 TB)

There are millions of businesses all running desktop PC's, Laptops and servers, all doing things the above mentioned cant do.

The above mentioned devices are simply another form of communicating / doing tasks.
How do you think ISP's would go running their services from Tablets.
Theres two basic types of users, Home/General Users and Business. The business will always out way the average user that simply wants the latest "toy or gadget".

Now that's thought! MS paying users to take Windows 10. That could create quite a spike in market share :) And it wouldn't even need to be open source to do that.

Its that "home and general" category that has undergone a massive transformation over the last 5-8 years or so which has had a knock on effect on how enterprise computing is done. Yes, PCs will always have a place in enterprise but they are sharing that space with a phone/tablet combo that never existed in the late 90s and much of the 2000's and as a result some of the PC only tasks have been re-defined so that they can be done on tablets. Obviously server side work loads will remain dedicated to servers (horses for courses) and admins etc but people who are mobile for 80% of their day now have the option of using a laptop/tablet for a lot of their work which means that they can do all their office admin stuff without having to come back to the office to deal with all that paperwork.. again.

1398554 2015-04-15 08:43:00 Imho - MS will never go open source on Windows, it its major cash cow.

Windows will never go open source because then MS's complaints about Linux stealing code from Windows will be exposed as the lie that it is.

That has never stopped MS in the past..

MS have been caught (& sued) for using(stealing) non open source code, more than once
stealing code = piracy = pot calling the kettle black, perhaps
