HDMI and USB are now legacy connectors akin to VGA and Ethernet. as mobile devices get more powerful, gone is the desktop replaced by the docking brick. its not a hard prediction to make. |

I could see displayport taking over video connections and ethernet morphing into a high speed optical connection of some kind but I seriously doubt USB C will replace either. Also a world in which all manufacturers settle on one standard seems like it's more than years away. On top of which considering USB 3.0 has barely started to become common and it's already being replaced by 3.1 and USB C it's hard to imagine either of those will still be standard in a decade. USB C is just a connector type though, and they could decide to use it for everything, maybe. It's conceivable different data types could be transmitted over the same cable using the same connector despite being electrically quite different. |

I wasn't aware Ethernet had been displaced from it's spot. What are devices using now? Ohh, yeah, and for the suckers, there's the gold plated connector versions, and the monster cable versions as well, which cost 3 times more, but give much greater purity of signal and the comfy familiar feeling of an empty wallet. |

What are devices using now? wifi your new tv will have hdmi, usbc, usb, ethernet, wifi etc. display port is already obsolete when thunderbolt is considered, as dvi is considered obsolete where hdmi considered. (although that pesky scaling phenomenon still bugs the rectum out of me) as far as i can see the only deficiency USBC has currently is a lack of bandwidth to power 8K displays, this surely will be remedied before they hit the market. HDMI shares this bandwidth deficiency. remember that we love legacy ports, they aren't going away. usbc will most assuredly be much more popular than all prior connectors combined. and i figure from a marketing standpoint where many consumers amalgamate 1080p, hdmi and fullHD into awkward terms, whats another 4 letter acronym that builds upon a very familiar 3 letter acronym doesnt seem hard for your tv to charge your device while streaming video/audio from it. | 1398146 | 2015-04-07 05:28:00 | Display port is still being developed, 1.3 came out last September adding all kids of support for 4K and above including the option for 4k + USB 3.0 1.4 is expected to add 8K video support en.wikipedia.org Considering it's been developed by VESA as the replacement connection for VGA, DVI, etc and is intended for video applications I would still back it over USBC as the likely default video connection in future, possibly in combination with HDMI 2.0 which is likely to stick around on TV's for quite a long time. I'm sure USB in whatever form it evolves into will be very common for quite some time but I find it unlikely it'll replace all the connections you mention. Of course if they simply standardised to a common cable & connector for all the different digital connections it'd be great. Colour me skeptical though. |
