| 1482926 | 2021-12-16 04:14:00 | I just got a very genuine looking email from NZTA telling me my rego was about to expire and "click here to renew". Fortunately the date was quite incorrect so I poked about a bit and sure enough it is totally phishing. So be warned. |

| 1482930 | 2021-12-16 06:29:00 | I got one a while ago from NZ Post I think saying a parcel I was waiting from Aus was underpaid and I needed to stump up some coin for it to be released and delivered. I drafted a email of complaint to the company sending it, and as always I saved it before sending coz we know you never send an email when angry. Was fortunate because the next day I noticed the name after the @ was screwy - it wasn't what would be expected. So I deleted it. Point being - I've always said I had to much 'common sense' to fall for this crap, but IT LOOKED SO REAL! Everything about the email made sense, even down to what I bought. |

When someone sends something it wont be sent if the postage is short, its not going to make it all the way to NZ THEN they decide it was short. Along the same lines, SWMBO had some stuff coming from Aliexpress a while back, the store actually did under estimate the postage, then wanted more $ before they would send it, SWMBO told them to take a hike, and insisted they refund, at first they wouldn't so she contacted Aliexpress directly and laid a complaint, a few days later the full $$ Turned up in her account. The other one thats doing the rounds is the scam relating to watching porn and capturing video because your computers been hacked (had several calls about it) - Nice try scammers. |

| 1482933 | 2021-12-16 17:41:00 | I, too, have had an email apparently from NZ Post about a parcel. First I was not expecting a parcel although I suppose someone could be sending me a parcel that I know nothing about. Secondly I put my cursor over the name of the sender without clicking which showed me the address of the sender and saw that it did not come from NZ so I just deleted the email. I have also received an email from, apparently, NZTA saying my rego was due. I had no need to check the address of that sender as I knew my rego was not due for a couple of months. But I do wonder how many people do fall for these scammers. Surely if you were not expecting a parcel or your rego is not due, you would become suspicious? One thing I am curious about is where they get your address from? With some of the scammer emails I receive they say: Hi (email name) and then the message. Our email address is a combination of our two names so it looks a bit funny to be addressed as "namename." I don't receive very many of these emails, though, so it's not too much of a problem, but I am interested to know how many are tricked by these scammers? |

They get details many ways, one common way in emails is all it takes is some site to sell user details, or a real common one people actually give them the email address. How many times does someone send a harmless joke, and they forward it to someone else, and all the recipients email address are there ? It happens a lot, then the scammers only need to get it from1 person and thank you a new list of suckers. Another which is VERY common, is they have scanning software that trolls Social media sites collecting peoples email addresses. Its easy as pie to forge someones email, as you mentioned earlier I put my cursor over the name of the sender without clicking which showed me the address of the sender and saw that it did not come from NZ BUT how many people actually know how to do that ? If you have a look at the scam emails, the rego or as mentioned, the porn ones there's NEVER any actual proof. If it were real and from NZTA they actually give the vehicle details of the Reg, not just some generic and fake number. Same with the Porn scams - if they were real wouldn't you think they would actually put some sort of actual picture as proof ?? They work on the shock factor sometimes ,people think they may have done something wrong and act quickly without thinking. If some complete stranger came and knocked on your front door, and said I need your credit card details for what ever reason - we all know what you would say  GOT a funny story around that a old friend did once - its a hoot  if you want some more options on how they do it, go to google and search "how do scammer get your email address" or phone number. Some good articles. :) |
