1482875 2021-12-14 01:53:00 The most unforgettable beer I've ever tried - unsuccessfully - was Harleys, from Nelson. Couldn't give it away, so 95% of a flagon hit the drain where it doubtless killed any bacteria in the next mile or two of pipe. I did not add that transfer to any of my flagons! A common phrase of the time was that if you unscrewed the cap of your flagon, and the cork got sucked in, it was genuine Harleys. Some hardy souls with iron taste buds claimed it COULD be consumed but that was a waste. The liquid could be sprayed on your paddocks to kill grass grub and stamp out roundworms while the sediment made a great combined compost and insecticide. (Breaking up the sediment was a seriously healthy cardio-vascular workout.)
:yuck:

Without a doubt Harley’s was the worst apology for a beer ever brewed.

A distant second was Lucky or the original Tui, you choose, closely followed by Standard.

As for best, I’ll go for a drop made by Lion years ago called “Burtons”, which wasn’t widely distributed, but was as good as Harley’s was bad.

Now days I lean towards Spirits and have a little distillery of my own. ;)

Cheers. :)

1482876 2021-12-14 02:14:00 I recall back in the 80's the divide between DB draught drinkers, and Lion Brown..

Husband used to buy a wooden crate of DB.
A decade later he decided he liked LIon, couldn't see why he hated it before.

Although his sense of smell decreased....

Last few years he didn't care, he said it all tasted like tap water, so we bought whatever was on special. He also quit making it, as some came out awful, he couldn't tell, I'd taste it and ugh.....one of them had this really weird taste....

His last beer was a can of Heineken son bought and I snuck into the hospital for him. He drank it through a straw...

I like the lagers, like Haagen...or there was a Wanaka craft one ages ago I liked.
Not the strong tasting ones.

My Dad also described Harleys as terrible . I deliberately did not mention it in case I offended some members who found it tolerable.
I do recall ,now the "great divide" between DB and Lion drinkers. There were some marked regional preferences e.g. East Coast -Leopard , Waikato, OLtago -Speights . In late 1980s driving from Ak to Palmerston North i always stopped at the pub on the corner at Bulls because it had Waikato (Green) on tap. I also was quite a fan of Waikato Strong Ale (had xxxx on the label. There have been many short term launches -Kiwi Lager, Khutze and Brew 22 to name a few. The latter had a terrible advert :"I met this girl and she was drinking Brew 22 too"

1482878 2021-12-14 05:24:00 Dad said Harleys was sat on the bar in a barrel when he was a kid before beer was pressurized by C02 and plumbed to the bar. Occasionally a hop or something nasty blocked the tap in the barrel. Most towns in New Zealand had their own brewery Nelson was a city in name only because it had a cathedral and there were two. Dodsons and the afore mentioned, which shouldn't be mentioned too much.
I was a DB drinker, Ford owner and National voter and proud of it, gave me sense of belonging and community. Used to think Lion drinkers, Holden owners and Labor voters were homosexual and still do. There was Leopard beer around and could be got at Malloys liquor store in Motueka. Now the problem with being 15 and a drinker in Mot was the publican etc knew your Dad and when you went in they would say how's Merv (Dad) and you would have to beat a retreat. The only way we could buy a crate of piss was to drive over the Takaka hill to the Rat trap Pub, they would sell you a crate if you had a heartbeat and some money or possibly just some money.
I treasure the days I spent pissing up in pubs more than any other memory except maybe my first solo flight in a aircraft that includes rooting the local farm chicks, marriage and kids being born. I used to drink at Okaramio Tavern in Blenheim, the Thunderbird Inn in Auckland, Bridge hotel in Bulls.
I guess they are days gone for ever because drink driving has gone from a sport to a crime. Must admit to a few fender benders after driving back from the pub pissed again your honour.

1482879 2021-12-14 06:28:00 The most popular pubs in the Nelson region now are the Harringtons family owned Sprig and Ferns and the very popular Free House which always has around 10 craft beers on tap gary67 (56)
1482880 2021-12-14 22:59:00 There used to be a Leopard beer that tasted exactly like Steinlager , but without the bad hangover Steinlager was famous for . ( Leopard gold ? )
It wasnt around for long & then the brand seemed to disappear . Loved that brew . Possibly was just the Leopard brand slapped on an Ak brew .

1482881 2021-12-15 04:17:00 Does anyone remember Lion Super? one jug and you were on your ear. It only lasted for a year I think. Forced to drink it at the Bottom Pub in Renwick prefect (6291)
1482882 2021-12-18 04:34:00 You are right Ken I remember it well Originally called the Steinecker Bar, but changed when Heineken objected and the name changed to Steinlager. The bar was sin the Civic Hotel. Richard (739)
1482883 2021-12-18 04:38:00 Does anyone remember Lucky Lager, Lucky Ale and Lucky Stout which were announced and launched with great fanfare by a brewery ( can't remember which of the two) and was a complete flop. They had paid mega to a Hawaiian brewery for the use of the name but I seem to think it lasted only a few months. Nobody bought it.
Who remembers? I can't be the only one.

1482884 2021-12-18 04:42:00 The worst beer I have ever tasted was Brains in Cardiff. It was the only time I wished my glass was empty. Richard (739)
