1479964 2021-08-22 02:06:00 Hi All

My (home built) PC had a failing HDD so replaced it yesterday after moving all the data off. Now it won't boot from MSATA where Win10 (Insiders build) is located. What happens is that it tries to load Win7 that was automatically saved to one of my drives when Win10 was installed. What I have tried over the past 20 hours is:
- Checked in BIOS that the MSATA is the boot drive - yes
- Checked that BIOS sees all drives - yes
- Unplugged my 3 HDDs so only MSATA was available and tried booting - system said there was nothing to boot from??
- Tried different combinations of where the HDDs connected to the mobo
- Gone back to all the original drives and where they were connected
- Torn my hair out

None of these work.

When Win 7 tries to load it comes up with a User Profile error and wont go past the login screen.

The gear I am running is a i7 3400s (from memory) about 8 years old (but runs fine for what I use it for - mainly a media centre), 16Gb DDR3 ram, no separate graphics card, a Gigabyte Z77-D3H Mobo

Any suggestions to help would be greatly appreciated. It seems like it should be a simple solution but it escapes me at present and I'm quite frustrated.

Thank you - Peter

1479965 2021-08-22 04:16:00 Its possible the MBR is not there or damaged.

If the Original Failing drive is removed its possible the Boot is still on that. Try putting the old drive back in If you have it still and see if it boots.

If it does you need to rebuild the MBR, One set of instructions: www.diskpart.com

OR neosmart.net

NOTE: you DONT need the Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows Advertised.

OR Google how to do it.

1479966 2021-08-22 07:43:00 Thanks wainuitech, all the drives that were were connected at the last time Win10 boot successfully are connected now but no difference. Have tried rebuilding the MBR but no change, still tries to boot into Win7. I did note that the MSATA drive show as being the 'G' drive rather than 'C' - would that be part of the problem and if so, how would I change?

I might try disconnecting all HDDs and see if I can bring up Command Prompt with just the SSD and go through the fixmbr commands again.

Cheers

1479967 2021-08-23 06:32:00 OK, so I disconnected all the HDDs and just had the mSATA drive available then used the USB boot as mentioned in Option in the diskpart.com link, it took me to the Command Prompt where I tried the different fixmbr commands in the first option. All operations are completed successfully for the first 3 but with the 'rebuildbcd' command, while it found one windows installation and I confirmed to add it to the boot list, it came back with error "The requested system device cannot be found".

Does anyone know what this means and if fixable?

Thanks

1479968 2021-08-23 07:28:00 Something to look at.

1st Was the original Drives in any sort of RAID setup ?

2nd. With Only the SSD connected, on start up go to the actual Boot menu (may need to be enabled in the BIOS) Or it will flash along the bottom of the screen what key to press OR go into the BIOS and it will be there (boot Menu) When it opens, is there an option "Windows Boot Manager" If so click that. Its not the actual drive that has to be 1st, its the boot manager.

As for the Question
"The requested system device cannot be found".

Does anyone know what this means and if fixable?
have a read, www.partitionwizard.com may need to reinstall if nothing else works.

1479969 2021-08-25 08:25:00 Thanks for the help with this. While none of the suggestions actually worked, I got to understand and learn a lot more about this and what the problem could have been. There wasn't any RAID involved and wasn't able to get into Boot menu - nothing would recognise Windows on the mSATA, even with all the other drives disconnected, except, ironically, safe mode in Win7 which I managed to get working so was able to backup some files I couldn't get elsewhere.

In the end, I have reinstalled on the mSATA without any other drives connected, got it working then connected my other drives excluding my failing one but including my new one, and restarting was blissfully normal. So success, just not as quick as I had thought but, hey it's worked. I just have to spend my time now reinstalling all my programs, it'll keep me out of trouble :)

Thank again
