491339 2006-10-14 07:16:00 Every application I run insists on reverting to a paper size of "letter". I have all the printers set as A4, and that sticks, but they are always overridden by the app wanting "letter". If I change the size while the app is open it is OK, but next time - back to "letter". :badpc: I've changed everything I can think of, but I can't get anything to default to A4. I'm guessing it is a Control Panel setting or registry tweak, but I can't find it.

Any ideas?

491340 2006-10-14 07:23:00 I take it u installed the printer driver?

What app are you talking about? Any program?

You can configure a printer in control panel / printers and faxes.

491341 2006-10-14 07:24:00 Hi Tony. If you are using Word, click on File > Page Setup and the Paper Tab. Select your paper size and then... most important... click on Default at bottom left of the dialogue box. Should do the trick. Scouse (83)
491342 2006-10-14 07:28:00 Does it use some sort of template (that includes page setup)... MS Word still is a good offender when it comes to this...

Otherwise goto the printer control panel, select properties and change every reference to letter you can find to A4.

Also check the printer itself has paper guides set to A4 where appropriate nad any setup it has..

491343 2006-10-14 10:22:00 Yes, I have installed the printer driver, and set A4 as the paper size.

I tried the "default" fix in Word and that seems to have done the trick. Still have the problem in Excel and Access, though - and I suspect in other apps.

It is not just one app I am talking about - it seems to be in all the apps that have a printing facility. I just checked Paint Shop Pro, Turbocad and Adobe Indesign and they are all defaulting to letter. Even though the document setup in Indesign was A4, when I came to print the setup gave me Letter as the default.

I read something somewhere about the locale affecting this sort of stuff, but as far as I can see, everything is set for NZ.

491344 2006-10-14 21:01:00 Hi Tony . XP Help suggests:
"To specify paper size
To change printing preferences, you must have the Print permission, which is one of several printer permissions . For more information, click Related Topics .

Open Printers and Faxes .
Right-click the icon for the printer you are using, and then click Printing Preferences .
Click Advanced, and under Paper/Output click Paper Size .
Click the paper size (form) you want .
Notes
To open Printers and Faxes, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Printers and Faxes .
You can also open printing preferences in Printers and Faxes by clicking a printer, and then clicking Select printing preferences under Tasks on the left side of the window . This option is available only if folders are set to look like a Web page and a printer is selected . For more information, click Related Topics .
Any changes you make in Printing Preferences will alter the default document settings for the printer and will affect all documents you send to the printer . To change print settings for individual documents from within a program, click Page Setup (or Print Setup) on the program's File menu, and then make selections .
To set the printing default for all users connected to the printer, see Set printing defaults . "

491345 2006-10-14 22:43:00 Thanks for the pointers scouse, but the point I am making is that (as far as I can tell) I've done all that, and I still get "Letter" as the default paper size. I am on an administrator account, so I have all the permissions.

I just looked at the other PC on the network (which shares the printer) and that one does appear to be defaulting to A4.

I also just discovered that my help has disappeared - "couldn't start the service", and when I tried to start it, "couldn't find the module", so I think it is rapidly approaching reinstall XP time.

491346 2006-10-15 00:23:00 Control Panel...Regional and Lanauge Options check and make sure location is set to New Zealand

If Location is set to USA (the default) when a program installs itself Uncle Bill has told the os that Americans use letter size paper therefore the installed app will use it also.

491348 2006-10-16 04:07:00 Perhaps Uncle Bill has decided that "US" ::= "World". Graham L (2)
