Where can I buy parts for laptops/notebooks? I have a couple of dead or dying ones here and would like to get them running. one has a dead motherboard and the other has some broken wires in the connection for the lcd backlight

491008 2006-10-13 01:25:00 In general, the only way to get parts for an old laptop is to buy another one of the same model. If that one works, the easiest repair is to toss the dead one. :D

Laptops don't have many "commodity parts". Memory, external power supplies, and sometimes disk drives are replaceable ... otherwise you're at the mercy of the manufacturer's service organisation.

CYaBro, the one with the broken wires is an ECS / model??? the the one with the dead motherboard is Compac / Presario 2100

Thanks for that KiwiMR2 .

Client is still paying off the Presario Graham L so I don't think they are interested in buying another one for parts

Am I am trying to find some way of joining the wires for the backlight in the ECS one - so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys . the joins would have to be able to tolerate the opening and closing of the laptop

491012 2006-10-17 00:31:00 I did say " . . . parts for an old laptop . . . " . ;) If the client is still paying off the Compaq, isn't it still in the guarantee period?

Joining the wires is going to be a problem . . . there's not much room in the hinge for the wires . You have already found that they make the wires only just exactly long enough . :(

I'd stagger the joints even if that means adding more new wire . That way you have the joints along the bundle, not all in the same place (and try to make the joints not in the hinge area) . I usually join wires by making a strong mechanical joint by twisting the wires at right angles to the line, soldering, then bending the tail down parallel to the wire . Heatshrink tubing is the magic stuff to add strength . The adhesive lined heatshrink is even better, if you can get it .

It might be worth considering making more joints than the minimum if that lets you use the original wire bundle through the hinge, with joints inside both the panel and computer case .

Would think so wouldn't you - must be on a really never never hp and I think this one could count as the 'the old one' Client did say that the motherboard popped it's clogs just after the warranty period ended but not how long it was sitting in the cupboard before she asked me to look at it .

Re the ECS laptop wires . Sticky heatshrink tubing - Oh I like the sound of that, in fact any heat shrink tubing sounds good . I spent a good hour and a half equiped with magnifying glass and pointy tweezers wrapping each join with little strips of insulation tape :stare: Damn near cross eyed now . Where do I get heatshrink tubing?
Thanks for all your help - very much appreciated .
