491373 2006-10-14 09:31:00 Am looking at upgrading harddrive storage (currently have 1x80GB and 1x40GB drives, both PATA). Looking at getting a 160+GB drive and hanging on to the 40GB drive, the 80GB drive will go into a file server (mainly music from my cd collection to be accessible by the entire network). Currently the 120GB I have is used for Linux, backups, and music. I am wanting to play round and dual boot Vista

I am looking at upgrading to SATA .. which will require a PCI sata card. If I go this way, what would a decent make of card be? Approx price of said brand?
If I upgrade the drive and stick with PATA then I know that when this mobo gets upgraded I will have to upgrade drives as well or try and find a PATA card.
I know SATA drives require special power connections, my PSU already has these.

Cant afford to upgrade motherboard and CPU at this time, hence the sata card. RAID ability is non-important (way down the track I might go for RAID0+1 but that will be way after the mobo/cpu/grafix upgrade)

Also, should I go with SATA-II and NCQ; SATA-I; or what?

heh?, If they remove the IDE slots from new motherboards then where are people going to plug in their CD/DVD drives?

Or has this already happened?...I would be surprised if it has (though I was caught with my pants down when AGP disapeared overnight....still, The cards themselves staged something of a resurection)

491375 2006-10-14 20:34:00 I notice some of the latest Intel Duo motherboards (some of the Asus P5 range for example) are starting to phase out one of the IDE chans in favour of SATA. I am assuming this will start happening with AMD mobos as well sometime soon Myth (110)
491376 2006-10-14 23:36:00 IDE is starting to be phased out unfortunately. There are a few boards out there that dont have any IDE channels but most have atleast one. The Intel 965 chipset doesnt have support for any IDE channels, with motherboard makers having to use third party chipsets to provide IDE.

Anyone buying a new harddrive today should probably buy SATA, a PCI addin card will set you back about $70 which is the best option in terms of future proofing your harddrive purchase.
