490915 2006-10-12 08:22:00 Bought a new motherboard, CPU, RAM and video card and constructed a system using hard drive, DVD etc from the old system .

Flick the power switch and it all starts up nicely with all the fans working and everything seemingly ok . I can get into the BIOS but after about ten seconds, the power cuts automatically and the machine turns off .

What is likely to be happening here? I've checked connections and like the RAM and they seem to be secure . I've tried a different power unit but it still happens .

I've tried it without the video card and it still happens .

Sometimes it dies earlier and sometimes it lasts a little longer but it always crashes .

I've run out of ideas what do try next .

Wouldn't have long enough to chnage a setting before the power cuts out.

490919 2006-10-12 08:51:00 Hmm I'd suspect overheating, can you see the temps in the BIOS before it cuts out....? gibler (49)

I'll take a look next time I try to boot it up . I suspect overheating to but if the fans are going what will I have to do to cool it down?

I haven't built a system before so I may be missing something really obvious .

490922 2006-10-12 09:01:00 Is there a 4 pin ATX adapter on the mobo? If there is, is the adapter from the PSU plugged into it? Speedy Gonzales (78)

To avoid confusion we are talking about the same machine lol

Yes connected - but I'll have another look as with a modular power unit it needs to be connected at both ends. I thought it wouldn't start if this wasn't plugged in.
