490831 2006-10-11 23:09:00 I have a computer that restarts itself as its on the 'loading windows xp' screen, i can see the blue screen for a split secord before it restarts, then it does it again and again and never gets past the loading windows xp screen without restarting, i thought it may be the ram so i ran memtest on it over night and returned no errors. i tried putting a different hdd in it that has xp on it and it loads into windows fine so is it the hdd that's causing this problem?
is it possible that a sector has gone that has some of the windows startup files on it so it fails to load into windows?
how could i fix this? which files should i replace? will i have to do a reformat?
is this a common problem? maybe a virus?

i've found this link (support.microsoft.com) that may be related to my problem but it still doesn't solve it, it just tells me to install another copy of windows so i can set in the registry to turn autoreboot off so i can read the error, but from experience the error doesnt really tell you a hell of a lot, unless it's going to tell me that some files are missing?
which do you think would be the quickest way to solve this problem?
cheers

490834 2006-10-12 00:23:00 Ok... you will need to do a repair install of windows then kennie (10559)
490835 2006-10-12 00:59:00 If you don't have any important data that you can't lose, I would suggest you to perform a clean install of your OS in this case. Your Windows files have most likely been corrupted.

It's good to reinstall XP after 1 - 2 years. It runs faster, too. Take this opportunity to clean up your HDD.:D
