| 492354 | 2006-10-18 03:35:00 | I am fixing a computer for a 'friend'. I replaced the hard drive in it, boot from the Windows XP CD and writes files to the hard drive fine. But when the computer restarts, it comes up with the error message: 'Couldn't open disk multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) NTLDR: Couldn't open disk multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)' TIA :help: :badpc: |

| 492355 | 2006-10-18 03:38:00 | Did you format the drive? If so what sort of format? Either the harddrive is dying or something is corrupting the data on the drive. Check the IDE cable to make sure its ok, are the hdd and cd on the same channel? | Pete O'Neil (6584) | ||

I have formatted it to no avail. i would say that the new hd isnt set as 1...the boot drive ? 2 its fitted as a slave drive? is the hd picked up in bios? you say windows cant install you must just mean it does but not boot? try the 2 things above cant be alot else as long as you formatted before the win install |

| 492360 | 2006-10-18 04:50:00 | The HDD is configured as master, and the BIOS recognises it. It copies files, then reboots and won't start. It doesn't get up to the install stage. :badpc: |

| 492361 | 2006-10-18 05:16:00 | Is the BIOS set to boot from the HDD first? Bust out DOS and use FDISK to delete all partitions, so that the disk is total clean and then use the XP installer partitioning software. Have you got any software like PartitionMagic? | Pete O'Neil (6584) | ||
