492659 2006-10-19 04:44:00 Earlier this month it was learned that the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program in Vista would actually lock computers that failed a WGA authentication check.

Now comes word that Microsoft has changed the licensing terms for the retail version of Vista. Customers will only be able to reinstall Vista on a new machine once. After that, they will have to buy a new copy of Vista.

Full story here (www.devxnews.com).

Think I'll still be sticking with good ole 98. :horrified

You may be misinterpreting the issue, what it means apparently is that you can only "transfer" a full retail version to another "new" PC once. But you can re-install Vista to the same PC without restriction.

492662 2006-10-19 04:59:00 Sounds perfectly fair and reasonable.

The code will be perfect and virus resistant. There will be no slowdown requiring reinstalling periodically.

What could ever go wrong?

After all, it's made by Microsoft, and comes with their wonderful guarantee (they'll repace the medium if if it's faulty).

No!!?? My wife runs 98 and its fine. I reckon you can make 98 pretty secure with 3rd party software. 98 is just the presentation manager!

492664 2006-10-19 06:07:00 I really hope they have a Corporate version if I have to deal with Vista at work... gibler (49)
492665 2006-10-19 06:08:00 Oh the joy of corporate enterprise agreements, I would be pretty much pissed if I was a retail customer. Now you dont even get to KEEP your license. People can change hardware, PC's quite abit between O/S releases. I cant believe Microsoft are getting this greedy. Hardware prices come down Microsoft O/S/Software just gets more and more expensive. Considering the monopoly these guys have on world commerce, I would say the Amercian Justice system failed when it attempted to punish MS for its IE intergration to the O/S. SolMiester (139)

No he is not. If I buy Vista and then upgrade the MB and reinstall Vista I can only reinstall it once after that so they can get stuffed.

492667 2006-10-19 20:56:00 So, for retail version of Vista, read OEM version of Vista . :groan:

What's the difference between the two versions now .

In 98 every program has full access to all memory . With an error in something like Word or your browser a hacker could install a rootkit with no hassle at all . The only security advantage is that 98 is now obscure enough to make the payoffs much lower for an attacker who developed such a rootkit .

Antivirus and antimalware programs are doomed to always be a step behind the bad guys . They rely on signatures, which take time to generate and require a sample of the original malware . You can never rely on them to keep your systems 'secure' . Only a secure underlying system with restrictions on what programs can do can manage that .

Listen, lad . I built this kingdom up from nothing . When I started here, all there was was swamp . Other kings said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built it all the same, just to show 'em . It sank into the swamp . So, I built a second one . That sank into the swamp . So, I built a third one . That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp, but the fourth one . . . stayed up! And that's what you're gonna get, lad: the strongest castle in these islands .
