492612 2006-10-19 03:53:00 I just noticed i have been unable to defragment my computer. Whenever i try to, a window that says "disk check is scheduled to run on the next restart. Defragmenter unable to run until disk check is finished"

So, i try doing a diskcheck and when i pressed start, it stopped at phase 1 and said "Windows was unable to complete the disk check"

So i tried restarting my computer, unchecking and checking all of the boxes and the same things always happen. It CANNOT COMPLETE THE DISK CHECK!

I have tried doing it in safe mode also, with no luck!

PLZ HELP!!:help:

492613 2006-10-19 04:03:00 Your hard drive could be dying. pcuser42 (130)
492614 2006-10-19 04:35:00 Im pretty sure my hard drive isn't dying becuase the only proablem is, that i can't do a disk check or defragment and is showing no signs of dying. wasian87 (11278)
492615 2006-10-19 04:44:00 Try booting from a floppy or CD and scan. A program (possibly virus/spyware/malware) could be constantly using the hard drive. pcuser42 (130)
492616 2006-10-19 05:15:00 How full is the disk? Graham L (2)
492617 2006-10-19 05:36:00 WEll, i put it in safe mode, so im pretty sure that would stop most of the processes (which i checked for viruses)

And my disk is about 35 % full out of 100 gb

492618 2006-10-19 05:40:00 Do you have any idea if you have S.M.A.R.T. drive enabled?

If so, then run Belarc Adviser (www.google.com ml&ei=tw43Reg_m8iBA4LukPQN&sig=__Hs6RaJm3N1SHWroGz6KvNeSCcbA=&sig2=X6KAnHUf2eOoYwx5RHlDDA) to check the health report on your drive. Then you'll know for sure if the HDD is dying or not.

Might also be a good idea to print out and save the results of the scan too...just in case you lose the drive altogether...that way you'll have your licenses and keys for re-installing on a new drive. ;)

492619 2006-10-19 05:49:00 Well, i downloaded the Belarc Advisor and scanned my hardrive and my status was healthy. So, im pretty sure now that my hardrive will not be dying.

Any other suggestions?

492620 2006-10-19 05:52:00 What does your Task Manager reveal about CPU consumption while running normally?

I smell a virus or a Bios problem.

492621 2006-10-19 06:38:00 My Cpu usage varies from 0-5% usually, but sometimes it goes up to 15 or 20% wasian87 (11278)
