| 492507 | 2006-10-18 23:23:00 | Over the last month, including the previous two nights, Slingshot have had significant ADSL outages, which disconnected and then prevented my ADSL modem logging onto thier network. These outages last for up to 6 hours and only occur in the evening which is the time I want to use the internet. There are also other outages where although I am logged on, I couldn't access many websites, including internationl websites. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced ADSL outages in the Upper Hutt / Wellington area over the last few weeks. When I phoned slingshot, they told me that they were aware of the problems, but couldn't provide a solution, even though this wasn't notifed on their status page. Now they do have a message, but it doesn't expain what is causing the problems, and when it will be fixed. I am very disappointed in their level of service, and not informing their customers of these outages. I am wondering what I can do about this, as I want a reliable connection, which I am not currently getting, and it may not make any difference moving to another ADSL reseller that resells telecoms service. I am therefore considering moving to Telstra cable, as I am in Upper Hutt and it is cheaper. However I have purchased an ADSL modem with wireless networking built in, which will make this a waste of money, as cable uses a different type of modem. |

You get what you pay for unfortunately, its no secert that Slingshot is a budget ISP, if you want service then you'll have to pay for it. I was using Slingshot this year at my flat, it was a crap service but my flatmates were too tight to change to a different provider. Unfortunately DSL in NZ is incrediably substandard. If youve got access to Telstra cable then make the move, otherwise suck it up and get use to a crap service. |

However, I did notice when I first started with Slingshot, that they did have DNS issues. With that in mind I changed DNS server IP's in my ADSL router and have only had one issue since. Try using different DNS servers. The ones I use are: 202.27.158.40 (Yes.. Xtras primary DNS server) You can use any other NZ ISP DNS server IP as well as the second (or PM me for an international one) |

Maybe for dial up, however previous to signing up to broadband, I had been using them for dialup for 3 year with no problems. I understood that Slingshot only resold telecoms ADSL, and their pricing is not that much different from any other ADSL provider. There are cheaper providers out their, and I consider Slingshot a mid range provider. Slingshot originally positioned themselves as a budget provider, but they are now NZs 3rd largest ISP and they no longer market themselves as a budget provider. Those slingshot bread adverts explain that you get exactly the same quality of service that telecom/xtra provides. |
