| 492648 | 2006-10-27 00:47:00 | Opera probally has more users then OS X. That's probably correct. :) I for one am getting a bit sick of Opera getting left out all the time - its miles ahead of any other browser... FF is for OSS enthusiasts (omg! closed source == spyware), people that want to heavily customise (*** - half of my 50 extensions dont work with FF 2.0) or people that just want to keep it simple. I was most displeased with Juha's blog entry on PCWorld.co.nz: There's always Opera 9 I suppose, but its user interface is hard to get used to for me. The crazy thing about this is that Opera is ridiculously customisable as far as the interface goes straight out of the box - you can the layout the same a FF if you really want to... [/rant] |

I'm working on the assumption that we're all nerd enough to take basic security percautions such as firewall, and careful browsing practices... Now in my opinion, the security features don't matter, as I don't regularly do anything risky, thanks to common sense and sheer nerd intelligence, so it comes down to plain old user feautures. While IE7 has that funky tab-preview thing going on, Firefox added individual close buttons for it's tabs. That's about it. Most of firefox's cool stuff is done with 2.5th party add-ons.. IE at least tries to pump all this into the software you get straight from them, which is a mighty fine goal to achieve, looking at the million things you can do with firefox. Now for the crunch-time finish. I prefer firefox. Simply because I haven't found a way to do all the funky stuff I use firefox for in IE7. Plus I hat microsoft so much I'd rather pirate windows than use linux. Biased? I probably am, but I'll go with whichever option works best at the time. Example, I've got Openoffice, firefox, and winamp. but have moments where I fire out old (legal, I kid thee not) versions of the MS equivalents when they're required. Call me sensible, but I try to use whatever works best at the time, no matter who it's from. If I can get it free, legally, then I feel better about my existence, but if I have to get it the hard way (ahem... You've eitehr al done it, or have to much money on your hands) then I won't hesitate. But away from me, I'm going to go with firefox. It works, and despite it's lack of major improvements for the average user (though the 're-use open tabs' thing is handy as I tend to crash firefox a lot with my attempts to stream movies over diakup (long story) is quite useful sometimes) it does the job quite well, and with the 2-and-a-bit-partth add-ons and support, it gets my vote over microsoft's 'bugger off, you're a pirate and deserve to die' approach to things. But I do like thumbnail browsing. I tend to open too many windows at once in old-school IE, and let's be serious, the single 'close-tab' button worked quite fine in firefox 1.5... It just means I have to move the mouse a lot when I want to close multiple tabs in a row, which I can do without. I guess it's about even then... |

Like visiting a web site which might have been compromised? The recent VML exploit demonstrated exactly how wrong it is to assume you're safe. Using another vulnerability in cPanel this exploit was being unknowingly used by thousands of sites for weeks before the vulnerability was patched. Safe practices will protect you from 99% of what's out there but that 1% is still significant. Firefox has a history of much faster patch times. It helps of course that FF isn't tighly coupled with so many other components of the operating system. |
