I have a CanoScan D2400U that I have used for about 4 years without problems . The software I usually use is ScanGear Toolbox 2 . 6 & Photoshop LE . About a year ago I changed to a new desktop - again, no problems . In recent weeks I have seen the development of flakey behaviour which has gradually become more serious . The programme has been locking up after a few scans . In the last 2 days it has been a real problem!!! :angry

I was able to get 2 scans completed and then the software locked up . I exited the software and restarted . Then I resorted to rebooting . I noted that the scanner was no longer making any noise on startup . The light was on but that was all . The button on the front of the scanner no longer did anything . When I tried to start up from Photoshop - again nothing . I was getting suggestions that there were communication problems - checked connections - no problems . More drastic steps required - uninstalled the software and reinstalled . Again - nothing from the scanner - not a sound . I was beginning to suspect that I had a hardware problem .

Connected the scanner back up to the 'old' computer - the one that had never had problems! Again - nix!!! It suggested communication problems . Changed usb port, also the lead - again nothing . I was also seeing error messages (Code 15) - repeatedly . Looked like a dead scanner . I had, by the way, checked to see that the scanner was listed in 'control panel' . Also checked to see the drivers were present .

As a last resort I reconnected it back up to the 'new' computer and hey presto the joyous noises of the scanner starting up . Started scanning and I thought I was back in business . After 4 scans the old problem reappeared! What the f . . . is going on :badpc:

I decided to sidestep Photoshop LE and install Photoshop Elements 2 . Frankly I didn't expect much joy as I was by this time fairly convinced that my scanner was dying . Rebooted the 'new' computer and hey presto all seems well . I have been scanning for several hours without any apparent problems . The only thing I have noticed is that when Elements 2 fires up it tells me that it can't copy the clipboard as there is not enough memory . I have no idea whether this is significant in this context - the programme seems to be working .

Now, this raises several questions . Firstly, do you think I have a hardware proble? Is my scanner dying?

Secondly, if it was a software problem was it LE causing the problem? If so, why did it get worse over a period of time? Why was it not corrected by a fresh install (twice in fact)?

Thirdly, does anyone have any clues about this error 'Code 15'? I presume this refers to ScanGear Toolbox?

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance .
Michael
