| 493173 | 2006-10-22 10:01:00 | As described in a previous thread (forums.pcworld.co.nz), the saga continues. Got the PC back from the shop - they backed up all my data, formatted the HDD and reinstalled XP. Got it home, installed drivers for USB2, keyboard, mouse, scanner, printer. Installed XP SP2, then Zonealarm Security Suite and Woosh software. At this point I created a manual Restore point. Then installed Download Accelerator 8.1, Opera 9.0, Adobe Reader, Spybot 1.4, Media Player 10, DirectX 9c, Office 2003, Alcohol 52%, Omnipage Pro 14, and the latest iTunes - created another manual Restore point here also. All restarts fine to this point. Continued with a couple of games + their Expansion packs, then downloaded and installed Windows Installer 3.1, KB898461 and the dreaded Genuine (dis-)Advantage. Restart OK here also. Installed Shockwave, Java runtimes (2), Opera 9.02 upgrade, DivX, a few more small games, a text editor, SnagIt and Google Desktop 4. A restart at this point delivered my original symptoms - desktop image, no icons, no Task Bar. Restored back to Shockwave install - all OK again. Re-installed Opera 9.02 - restarted PC, symptoms reappear. AHA, I thought - the culprit!! Restored back to Shockwave install (restart all OK) and re-installed the text editor - restarted PC, symptoms reappear. Restored back to Shovewave install - symptoms still present!!! Currently trying a Restore back to MS Update point - will see what happens, but not holding my breath, since it seems to be taking an inordinately long time! NOTE: none of the software I have re-installed is new to the PC - and I am using the exact same software (down to the version) on my laptop, with no issues. So I think a software incompatibility can be ruled out. If I ever manage to get the desktop to appear again, I will run Spybot and Hijackthis over it - but I think this is probably clutching at straws... The OS is running on an 80GB Maxtor drive, which I have had for a couple or three years - I will have a look for a a diagnostic utility to use if I manage to get the desktop to appear again... Anyone with any other ideas??? :waughh: :badpc:  :help: |

| 493175 | 2006-10-22 16:17:00 | I get a hit on this stuff: O8 - Extra context menu item: Search &Dictionary - C:\Program files\Lexico\Toolbar\dictionary.htm Nasty The entry Search &Dictionary has been identified as nasty. O8 - Extra context menu item: Search &Thesaurus - C:\Program files\Lexico\Toolbar\thesaurus.htm Nasty The entry Search &Dictionary has been identified as nasty. I guess it might be the duality of it that is suspect, otherwise the site comes back as safe...hmmmmm |
