492999 2006-10-21 03:40:00 I am unable to Extract from a couple of .cab files on the Win 98se cd (legitimate copy) although a Dir listing shows that the files contain more than 1mb.

When I try to Extract a listing from Win98_56.cab Extract produces the error message:

"Wtcache.***: Starts in cabinet Win98_55 on disk '51'. No matching files."

Wtcache.*** is the final file in Win98_55.cab, I don't know what disk '51' means.

Trying to extract from the Driver14.cab has much the same results.

(The three *** as extensions on Wtcache are inserted by the board, the actual extension is WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot.)

Any clues to a cure appreciated:help:

Thanks

493000 2006-10-21 04:12:00 What do you need the files for exactly? pctek (84)
493001 2006-10-21 04:17:00 You have a problem because Driver14.cab and Win98_56.cab do not contain any files at all. Terry Porritt (14)
493002 2006-10-21 04:27:00 terry ???

both those locations contain files.

mayby your compression tool dosn't support windows cab files properly.

edit: i see why you can't extract it, its part of a spanned file. you need a compression tool that supports spanning and you need to open the first file of the spannned file (no idea which one at this stage).

I should have qualified my bald statement :)

My 98SE Upgrade CD has no files in those two cabs, but the full Win98 (first edition) does.

So I suspect that a full 98SE CD also has files in those cabs, but it seems a bit of a coincidence that it is those two very cabs that cannot be extracted from. Hence I assumed Valerie has an upgrade 98SE CD???

493004 2006-10-21 06:29:00 Well, the disk 51 refers to the layout (and problems) of the install files for a floppy disk install. It was left that way for the CD install for laziness / and or/ malice / and or / indifference / and or/ compatibility / and or / "we always do it that way". R2x1 (4628)
493005 2006-10-21 08:05:00 Seems you have some clues since you already know to extract files from the cabs.

Just a thought, but incase you're looking in the wrong cab, or the file is spanned across multiple cabs, you could try the wildcards to make Extract look through all the cabs for your files. It does this in an alphanumeric sequence starting from the first cab you specify.

I forget the technique to recurse through them all, but use Extract /? |more to get a page by page help, and set it to start from an early cab like W98001.cab (or whatever the filename is).

I don't need the files yet but need a listing of the contents of all of the .cab files for a project.

You have a problem because Driver14.cab and Win98_56.cab do not contain any files at all

Running Dir on the cd files shows that they contain in excess of 1mb of data.

Does this suggest that MS Extract.exe doesn't support spanned files:confused: I can find the first file of the spanned file so will have another play with your suggestion.

Thank you Paul.Cov. won't comment on that. I also have some clues about cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing and all the other things which are gender sensitive - ROFLMAO

Thank you all for responding with some good ideas for me to try. Just to demonstrate how confusing the situation is for this lesser guru, here is an extract from the MS Kb Q23811 (the Kb article has to be copied/pasted into Notepad to show the detail)

493007 2006-10-22 11:24:00 Whew!!!:badpc:

Have visited many sites and none of them list any files in Driver14 . cab or Win98_56 . cab . All of them list files at the end of the previous cab files, . dls and . WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot, which seem to be a music file and a graphics file .

Here ( . mvps . org/98SE_cabs . htm" target="_blank">basconotw . mvps . org) is one of the sites visited .

I give up on that .

Very many thanks to all who read and all who responded .

493008 2006-10-22 18:54:00 Running Dir on the cd files shows that they contain in excess of 1mb of data .

All that the Dir command says is that the . cab file is taking up that amount of 'reserved' space, around 1 . 7MB . It doesn't indicate at all whether there are any files in the cab . You need a cab viewer to see what is inside them .

Your quoted site showing that various cab folders are empty is exactly right, and that is why you were getting that error message, you can't get blood from a stone :)
