493624 2006-10-28 03:27:00 Whats the point of having CDs or DVDs that you expect to be able to read in twenty years time? We most likely will have moved on to yet another type of media and there won't be any cd or dvd readers around to read them with, the software will be obsolete and you should have moved all your data onto whatever is current then. 1st rule of technology hardware - buy for now, tomorrow it will be cheaper but next week it'll be obsolete! andy (473)
493625 2006-10-30 06:55:00 I've previously gone to great lengtha to determine which DVD media I can trust.

The reality is that CMC and Princo have traditionally been absolute garbage, and almost all of the media retailed in NZ is from the bottom of the range.
Imation and many other names you might assume to be reliable are using Princo or CMC media.

There's a couple of applications free to download to read the DVD manufacturers identity. All these paople buying Imation, Sony, Panasonic, Verbatim might be in for a nasty surprise if they both to use it!

I use and strongly recommend the Ritek F1 from Picosys. www.picosys.co.nz
I've used tons of Ritek. The Ritek G04 was great, but became redudnant when they upped the recording speeds. The G05 sadly was a dud (data rot over weeks to months), and has been replaced with the Ritek F1. If I remember rightly, I think the F1 dye is from Tako Yuden, who make the best rated DVDs in the world.

All you people writing onto Imation and CMC media - I strongly suggest you find some old discs and see if they can still be read cleanly. DVD was never designed for reliable data retrieval. It was made for MPEG, which in turn was designed to be somewhat 'fault tolerant', so that read erros doo not bring playback to a halt.

There's a brilliant website that actually compares media, burners and playback equipment. If you take the time it will tell you everything you need to know about your media and hardware. www.videohelp.com

Strongly recommended reading!
