494376 2006-10-26 00:47:00 It has been quite a while since I have visited this forum and was suprised by the general negative reaction to Norton products.

I have always used Norton and presetly have the Systemworks 2003 installed.

If Norton is so bad, is there another package that is better, and why?

This has been hashed over so much by so many, I would guess if I were in your shoes, that there must be proof that are obviated in just the number of persons unhappy with the performance of these "Security Systems". :illogical

494378 2006-10-26 02:56:00 There are many free alternatives that are just as good or better and there are
heaps of posts on this and other forums that will give you these.Don't be afraid of a reputable freebee, they do the job and do not use the resources or require injections of cash.

494379 2006-10-26 22:45:00 I used Nortons for many years only to find that virus writers get much pleasure in attacking it. I installed NOD32 which found Trojans and viruses that Nortons did not even see. I would suggest you load NOD32 (free 4 a month) and run it and see if it does what it did for me. I had the Trojan Ludmedud that Nortons could not remove even though their program is about 80meg in size where NOD32, 10 meg in size, removed it with not problem at all. qwerty (8480)

Coincidentally I have installed fully paid up Nod32 today . I feel very good about the decision .

494381 2006-10-26 23:41:00 I dont understand why people feel they have to purchase these A/V packages. I have used AVG for over 4 years now, and even with the amount of dodgy sites I go to with broadband, I have yet to get a virus AVG cant deal with! SolMiester (139)

Here here, most of the freebees are 99% as good as any you have to pay for.And pay for and pay for !!!!!!! There are polls and treads on this and other forums which support this.

Yes its fine. However I like the way NOD32 warns me about files containing viruses on websites, before I have fully downloaded them.

494384 2006-10-27 05:15:00 The biggest problem with Norton is that they kill off the old versions & the new versions kill your PC. That particular cure is worse than the disease Greven (91)

Live update did not work for me after a while. A reformat later it did not work again. I have used Antivir in the past and it seemed to work fine in that nothing bad happened. Currently using AVGFree.

I have heard good things about NOD32 and will check it out but why pay when you don't have to.

The last virus which infected the computer I had at the time was the "stoned" one in Australia so many years back I can't remember. My boss and I were swapping 3.5 floppy disks with work data on and I left one of his disks in the computer when rebooting mine. Oops! Set to boot from the A: drive then.

I tried Norton Antivirus but it turned into a resource hog.

Norton used to be a good name and was very good back in the days when MSDos 3.3 was around. I came to rely on Norton Utilities for all sorts of problems. The file manager was great! XtreeGold wasn't bad either.
