493991 2006-10-25 12:30:00 Comodo Firewall is very good one to try:

493992 2006-10-25 16:18:00 You are allowed two firewalls . . . one physical/hardware and the other more ethereal, as in software . They will co-exist well and offer a lot of protection . . . unless the administrator's rights are turned on (default setting in XP!) .

Remember that the administrator (you) can screw up the purposes of any firewall if you are so inclined .

As it is, I run the Windows firewall ( . microsoft . com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wfintro . mspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com), and with my physical one, I feel pretty safe .

The physical firewall is from Linksys, a BEFSR41 ETHERFAST CABLE/DSL ROUTER ( . hansenonline . net/Networking/Linksys101 . html" target="_blank">www . hansenonline . net) .

There are a lot of people who dismiss Windows firewall as ineffective and poorly made . . . . but I run it, have run it for a while and feel that Windows is likely in the best seat to protect it's own system . . . . . . let the flames begin . It DOES require SP-2 though! It's free too .

Issues of "inbound" verses "outbound" firewall protection appears to me to be vastly overrated as to importance . Staying away from the porn, gaming on the internet and p2p and warez sites are all dangerous no matter what amount of protection one has .

I feel many persons request this information when they really mean "security" instead . Remember that no one security program or anti-program can do it all . There are holes in the best of security . . . some are just plain wastefull of resourses in your computer and they gobble up the RAM for their own purposes .

Check out the general disgust with programs like McAfee and Norton/Symantec and their wastefullness . Just use Search (not a link!) on this site to see 4urself .

493994 2006-10-25 20:36:00 as far as comodo goes have a look at this ( . pcworld . co . nz/showthread . php?t=73280&page=2&highlight=tweak%27e+comodo" target="_blank">pressf1 . pcworld . co . nz)

zonealarm is the easiest to use .

otherwise sygate (whatch the known faults) or kerio/tiny .

windows firewall is fairly useless and frankly if you run an external router/firewall it does absolutly nothing .

application control is a must . however a firewall is not a replacement for a decent antivirus and antispyware .

Give kerio a go. I use the old version 2.15 and it passes all three of the tests that are at the comodo website.

493999 2006-10-26 18:56:00 I still use Tiny Personal. Do updates exist I wonder? It's unobtrusive, which means I guess it's great or not working. GS Guerilla Surgeon (6848)
