493982 2006-10-25 10:17:00 I use hosts in system32/drivers/etc folder to block sites that others cant use. Now i have some sites like http://news.google.co.nz/ which cant be blocked in hosts because it doesn't use http instead you have to use www.news.google.co.nz still the site couldn't be blocked. how do I block this site types of sites.Plz help. polo (6383)
493983 2006-10-25 10:30:00 the www makes no difference. only thing a host file won't block is those sites that only work by ip addy eg http://123.456.78.9.google.wannaby.com tweak'e (69)

493985 2006-10-25 20:19:00 What is this for? Home? Small business network?

If this is a single computer you might want to look at some sort of content filtering system. If this is for a small business network you could set up a transparent proxy to filter and cache content. You could try squid (http://www.squid-cache.org). Note that to run it on Windows you would need Cygwin.

493986 2006-10-25 20:30:00 been useing for for years. all the 'standard' host files include www and those without. btw none have http in front.

which site in particular are you wishing to block?

have you cleared your DNS cache?

493988 2006-10-26 16:17:00 im tryin to block news.google.co.nz just being quizzy, but would love to know why? Greg (193)
493989 2006-10-27 05:12:00 You can't block "etc.etc.etc because that's a URL, not a site name or an IP address. The Hosts file should contain site names and IP addresses.

Delete the protocol portion "http://" to leave the name of the site. :D
