Otherwise I would have thought that the library was buying discs that were not from zone four. Come to think of it it must be, because it did cheerfully play some of the discs. Eventually. 494546 2006-10-31 22:37:00 Well, zone 4 is us 'n oz etc. In spite of what they claimed were the original reasons for zones, I believe the zones were setup to protect theatres as movie releases in some countries were delayed for quite a while. If people could get movies from o'seas on DVD and see it 4 months before local cinema release, there would be a lot of bum-free-seats.
With the sound levels on DVD's, the problem is possibly that they have a wider dynamic range than contemporary music, it allows them to have plenty of headroom for effects. In the home situation, where you set your volume at the beginning of the movie to allow you to hear the conversations above your neighbour's lawn mower, when the sound that would be quite loud in a quiet movie theatre happens, the home viewer gets a sound that drives his speakers clear off the shelf. Next sound is flushing.
