| 494447 | 2006-10-27 02:52:00 | [QUOTE=johcar;494407]That's OK - mine doesn't either . OK, so you're at least partially up-to-date . Two options now (OK, there may be more, but these are my offerings): Option 1: Go to Windows Update and choose "Custom" (where you can select which patch or patches to download and install - or not, as the case may be) . Try downloading one at a time to see which one fails . Possibly none will, but this way you will eventually get them all down . . . Option 2: (a better one, IMHO) go to "Bigfix dot com" and read about their service (free to home users) . Once you are happy, download their client software from here ( . bigfix . com/update/bf1760 . exe" target="_blank">download . bigfix . com) , and install . You then need to subscribe to their "Fixlet" site for the OS you are using (there's an icon on the toolbar of the Bigfix client) . Then you 'gather' the appropriate fixlets (again, an icon on the toolbar) . This will then analyse your PC (much the same way that WU does) to establish what patches are appropriate . You can then download each one individually from a link in the Fixlet message . Again, this will establish which one (if any) are failing . This is a far quicker way of downloading/installing patches on an individual basis than using WU - Bigfix fixlet notices remain in the list on your PC until either deleted by you or downloaded/installed . Whereas WU analyses your machine each time you visit their site . Bigfix will load itself at startup thereafter and check for updates for available patches, and effectively do the job that Automatic Updates does (but won't download the updates until YOU want them) . So you can turn off Automatic Updates once Bigfix is installed . Just remember not to ignore Bigfix notification messages . I have been using Bigfix for just on five years on two PCs without problems . Note: Bigfix doesn't do Office Updates for the Home User edition - but get Windows up-to-date then revisit WU for the office stuff . . . Let us know how you get on Bigfix doesn't do Office Updates for the Home User edition I have the Standard addition, whatever that may be . Does that preclude me? |

| 494449 | 2006-10-27 23:07:00 | If you go to Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, can you see "Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803)" down near the bottom of the list? Yes, but there is no size alongside it |

| 494451 | 2006-10-30 03:43:00 | I got into Big Fix, but as you warned me, it wouldn't let me install all the Office vulnerabilities Microsoft keeps telling me I Need. | Siobhan (6842) | ||
| 494452 | 2006-11-01 03:15:00 | Today I got on to Microsoft on the phone. After waiting for half an hour, the guy found I had not downloaded SP2 for office - and that was the problem. he talked me through how to download it. Which I did. Then I ran it - preparing to install windows installer - please wait while Windows configures M. Office Standard Edition 2003 - Gathering Reqd information and Bingo! The Update Cannot Be Applied. So, I'm no further on. Curses!!! |
