494221 2006-11-05 00:10:00 I used your test ( . nzdsl . co . nz/module-Speedtest . phtml" target="_blank">www . nzdsl . co . nz) and got this:

Download: 700 kbps
Upload: 296 kbps

And yet my Verizon test ( . verizon . net/speedtest/speedtest500k . asp" target="_blank">infospeed . verizon . net) reveals this:

Download: 3462 kbps
Upload: 1998 kbps

CNet gives me this: 99512 . 2 kbps (something's funny there!)

Whatsmyspeed (http://whatsmyspeed . org) gave me this:

Your current bandwidth reading is:

1 . 04 Mbps

which means you can download at 132 . 86 KB/sec . from our servers .

I know that my speed is down a lot lately with the twisted pairs being all messed up and such . . . hopefully they will be the new FIOS cable in here for some real speed .

BTW: Verizon lowered my rates again to almost nothing for the time they have had this messed up . . . . . .

I think it's that old 120/240 volt problem again . . . . .

494223 2006-11-05 01:55:00 an exchange is not a small box on the side of the road

its usuly a old building
cant fit an exchange in a small box
Ta

That is true......but.....the roadside cabinet is likely to be fitted with ADSL equipment.

When my area was ADSL enabled, Telecom said that "Brown Owl Exchange" had been enabled and I could now go onto broadband (128Kbps then), but we have no Brown Owl exchange afaik, just a roadside cabinet at Brown Owl which is just about 900 metres away.

Again afaik,Upper Hutt for example has just one central exchange in Trentham, but lots of cabinets around the area.

494225 2006-11-05 03:21:00 Have now reached earth-shattering speeds of 40Kbits/sec - yes that is Kbits, not KBytes - slower than dial-up. Suffice to say that I'm very unhappy and XTRA is now refunding me. Erayd (23)
494226 2006-11-05 03:22:00 hahahah , oh well this will be interesting i guess , I just rung telecom and have asked for my plan to be changed over to the pro plan , Thanks to the heads up from everybody here i have stayed right away from the go large plan , Yes i know its quite a bit more money but if i have no problems then all will be good , well cross fingers anyway . I asked them to note down in my file that i have requested that should my change over create adverse reactions ie speed drop etc then i am to be put back onto the plan that i am currently on , And it may seem a a little strange i also recorded the whole thing in case telecom say they have no record of this . Anyway i asked if there were any problems with the pro plan and she said she has not heard of anybody complaining about it and so i asked what about the go large plan and she said oh i think everybody is complaining about it and she also said she was one of them and she was not impressed either .

Lets see what happens on the pro plan , i will report back after the change has taken effect and we will see what the speed increase is if any .

494227 2006-11-05 03:39:00 hmmmmmmmmmm , i only just rung them like 20 mins ago and my plan is already changed , reset the router and now am getting this

DS Speed 4192 Kbps US Speed 480 Kbps

ds speed is about the same as before but us speed has gone up from 160 to 480 , still one hell of a long way off of expected upload speed.
