494171 2006-10-31 07:59:00 Defiantly not. I was on a 2mbps/128k plan with Slingshot and it seemed to be reasonably ok. I was happy with the speed for the internet and xbox 360 live was alright,(was a little lacking but was more than playable). I then changed to the "unleashed" plan, with Slingshot of Max/max. Well since then I have had nothing but fustration. MY connection speed hasen`t improved at all, if anything it is slower an fluctuates form 6k to 1500k and that as high as its gone.Xbox live even disconnects it`s that bad and I can`t even play on live. Have been trying to contact Slingshot customer service and technical support for two days and after spending over 30 minutes on the phone each time I get disconnected. I realise that some things are out of an ISPs control but "man is wearing thin"

I will keep trying or may possibly change ISP
Please don`t get me started
Can`t help but think "unleashed", " been sold a dummy."

494172 2006-10-31 10:21:00 I was on the XTRA 2mbps/128kbs plan. However the actual download/upload speeds that my modem reported were 2.56mbps/160kbs. XTRA advised me that they set the speeds slightly higher than the plan stated to allow for Internet Traffic jams (or something like that).

This week I changed to the new "Go Express" plan which is meant to be maximum upload and download. Now my modem is reporting 5.7mbps/768kbs.

It does seem faster, but not blazingly so. I am wondering though if the modem is limiting my upstream speed? I have the old Nokia M1122, which I have had for approx four years? Below is a copy of the main page. Can anyone tell me if the M1122 limits the upstream to 800kbs? Should I upgrade my firmware? Could I get faster upload speeds with a newer modem? Thanks.

DSL status: OK (upstream 768, downstream 5696 kbit/s)

PPP status: OK (VCC1)

Ethernet status: OK (10Base-T)

Uptime: 0 days, 14h 52m 25s

SW boot version: Bxxxx110.R01
SW appl. version: Gx1x2230.R04
HW version: T66280.01 B

494173 2006-10-31 10:34:00 I have just run eight speed tests at nzdsl and that site reports my download as 4.7mbps and the upload at 630kbps.

So these readings are lower than what the modem is reporting?

494174 2006-10-31 21:26:00 Go Large is definitely not unleashed . . . yet . Telecom are just a bunch of absolute no-hopers!

I changed from Adventure plan to Go Large on 26 October .

At 7 . 15pm Friday 27th the Go Large plan kicked in .

The first thing I noticed was my IP address was now in the range 125 . 236 . xxx . xxx, and the modem management software said the modem was connectiing about 1000Kbps faster at around 5200Kbps, sometimes up to 6000Kbps .

Using Xtra's speed test said I had around 3500Kbps download, but international data transfer was only erratically around dialup speed, varying from below dialup speed to 2 or 3 times .

Eventually I emailed Xtra to ask what was going on, but after no reply for a day, I phoned the help desk, where initially they said there was no problem and rabbitted on about the speeds being cut if the download was exceeded etc etc,
I said come on, that's nonsense, I have only downloaded about 50MB in 2 days, Go away and find out whats up .
So he did, and came back with the info they have a problem .

Yesterday morning, I saw my IP address had changed to 219 . 89 . xxx . xxx range, and international download speeds had shot up to around 2000Kbps or so .

However that happy state of affairs lasted only for a few hours, it was back to IP 125 . 236 . xxx . xxx and dialup speeds for international stuff .

That's how it is now .

I only went to Go Large because it is $10 a month less than Adventure .

494175 2006-11-01 00:36:00 How do we get our frustration accross to the public in general?
Telecom always have an answer to cover their ass! "you are to far away from the ..whatever" their is no service to allow faster...
I live 1.5km from the centre of Palmerston North and CAN NOT GET CALL WAITING! to old to whatever.... yeh right.

494176 2006-11-01 01:03:00 My speeds are slightly faster - between 3.8 and 4.2Mbps but I cant seem to get a torrent to go at more than 30kBps which is pretty frustrating. And I'm talking about non peak times here.
Somehow I have still used close to 4GB, which is funny because I have not managed to download anything yet (other than several unicycle videos)

These people quoting torrent speeds make me laugh, as I know many are using crappy PUBLIC trackers where the maximum speeds are around 30-50KB/s, on any ISP or in any country due to everyone limiting there up speed lol.

Quoting torrent speeds without knowing AT LEAST if you are using a public or private tracker is pointless!

494177 2006-11-01 02:52:00 Im on the go large plan, and from speedtest.net,

my speed test to an auckland server is about 3167kbps,

but to Los angeles it about 1200kbps. so that would be my realistic speed right? since im looking at oversea websites and downloading from overseas servers.

right?

That speed sounds ok, I just got 286Kbps from LA using speedtest, but 757Kbps from speakeasy.
Over the last few days speedtest was giving me optimistic speed readings compared to speakeasy to the same cities in the US

The acid test is downloading a reasonable sized file.
This morning from a NY site, a Real Audio file was downloading at around 20-60Kbytes per sec, the same file just downloaded at around 100KBytes per sec, but the speed was up and down. It is not what I'd call blazing, and much slower than I had been getting on the Adventure plan.

Telecom have a problem, it has been discussed on geekzone amongst other sites.

What gets me is that Xtras network status says there is no problem with the network, neither have the frontline helpdesk staff been briefed on the problem.

That was why I linked to the Knoppix 5.0.1 DVD torrent earlier (a lot earlier) in this thread - yes, it's a public tracker, but it's also one with consistantly high performance and a lot of seeders; so should be an excellent test of bantwidth. On that torrent, I typically get as fast as my line can handle (~2.23Mbits/sec).
