495262 2006-11-04 10:09:00 Blocking in this way

(a) doesn't work against knowledgeable people.
(b) is not the best policy.

If I were you I would monitor access to such services rather than trying to block them. Inform people that you will do this in advance and why you are doing it - you have to inform people of such collection under the Privacy Act unless telling them compromises the reason for collection. By collecting data from a transparent proxy and contacting "problem" employees to deal with the problem you can deal with it on a social rather than technical level. Technical restrictions should always be a last resort if there are alternatives.

P.S. If an employee is failing to meet deadlines it makes sense to clamp down on them but if they can surf and complete their work and get a decent performance review then why bother? Give them more responsibility if you feel they're twiddling their fingers - they will love you for it. Blocking their favourite sites will only annoy them.

495265 2006-11-04 19:55:00 I agree it's not the bestway to handle it but because of my work load I just don't have time to monitor it properly. Ultimitly it's not my problem and at this stage it's really a carry on from previous management. In saying that though it seems to have worked some what as the likes of trademe etc. just don't feature anymore ;)

It took me ONE google search to get instructions on how to do it so yeah...I am a bit surprised no one has worked it out.

Cheers
