495169 2006-10-31 02:15:00 Accuracy and precision of terminology are not "nitpicking". They can save a great deal of time, especially when the subject is technical. ;)

I still want a "shovel" icon. :(

495170 2006-10-31 02:39:00 Its a peice of **** router, they cant handle more than 1 or 2 clients without overheating and locking up. It'll be sufficent for your needs but the moment you add anoter client expect problems. Pete O'Neil (6584)
495171 2006-10-31 06:17:00 So Hubs use token ring technique? gum digger (6100)
495172 2006-10-31 12:32:00 Star topology.

Basically hubs are an old version of a switch.
They both allow you to conect multiple computers/devices to the network.

With a hub only one computer can sucessfuly pass data through at a time.
A switch is much faster with many devices using all at once, they work on different layers of the OSI model...getting complicated now.

If you have a hub, use it, if you need to purchase buy a switch.

495173 2006-10-31 22:23:00 I have a hub lying around...But rob99 can we control the bandwith of Inernet on the other pc?. gum digger (6100)
495174 2006-10-31 23:58:00 Not without getting more hardware, or installing bandwidth management software on the other PC - the 302g does not have a traffic shaper. Erayd (23)
495175 2006-11-01 10:30:00 Hubs and switches are just a junction box with no configuration, yo will need a router to do that. Rob99 (151)
495176 2006-11-02 08:04:00 OK i just got the free modem from Xtra & its DSL-502T.
Now how do i connect this modem on the HUB?. there are 8 ports on the hub.
all name X.

495177 2006-11-02 10:07:00 Yep just plug it into the hub, without knowing much about your hub I would stay away from the ports at each end and go for the middle ones first. Depending on the hub sometimes port 1 will be a uplink.
Then plug your computers in.
Run the xtra CD and you should be fine. Else 10.1.1.1 should get you into the modem, you may need to change your TCP/IP to obtain automatically or into the same range as the modem 10.1.1.2 etc.
