496067 2006-11-02 13:10:00 I just noticed that there are two links which provides same Xtra speed test but one of them is dummy.

I normally go to www.jetstreamgames.co.nz

under 500KB test few minutes ago I got:

Download time: 4.016 seconds
Size of file: 520 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 1056.6 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 129.5 (kilobytes/second)

The tricky thing is I found another link today also UNDER Xtra website:

jetstream.xtra.co.nz (jetstream.xtra.co.nz)

which gives me following:
Download time: 0.063 seconds
Size of file: 520 Kilobytes
Estimated line speed: 67352.4 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 8254 (kilobytes/second)

I run the tests several times and I am pretty sure that there is no caching problem since I either press and hold Ctrl while clicking on refresh or empty IE's cookis, Temporary files, etc before running the test.

So obviously people go to the second link who doesn't look carefully what the figures show may think they got high speed or unleashed speed...

The second link maybe well known for beginners of Xtra since it is just under the section of "Connection speed and availiability" on the LHS menu of Xtra webpage.

you can try it. Maybe I'm wrong OR maybe something wrong with Xtra's website; or maybe something else we should imagine?!
heteroscedasticity (11381)
496068 2006-11-02 15:18:00 ASSUMING you are running IE.....goto tools/internet options/temporary internet files and delete the cookies and files...............THEN run the 2nd test..... drcspy (146)
496069 2006-11-02 18:36:00 It must be you cause I just tried it and I got true representation of my line speed both gave me 224Kbps - 210Kbps The_End_Of_Reality (334)
496070 2006-11-02 19:10:00 I got roughly the same from both. pctek (84)

Yes, i deleted all that i have to delete. the second always shows the amazing speed for me. I'm running IE7 and this might be the problem...

anyway, i'd like to see this is my mistake...;)
heteroscedasticity (11381)
496072 2006-11-02 23:16:00 It is different every time I click on it, and CTRL-Refresh does the same i.e. different speeds. No need to worry about cache, TIF or cookies, for me anyway.

Interestingly though, I am getting 9700 to 9800kbps on the latter site, but only 5500 to 5600 on the first link. Maybe there is less load on the jetstream.xtra server? I suspect games would be pretty busy.

Cheers

Xtra used to say that their speed test was run off a server that was unaffected by any other influence other than your line and hardware - so if that's still the case I'd assume it was on a small but entirely independent server, which won't be affected by any loads on their game servers.
