495892 2006-11-01 20:54:00 Hi

I never really took much notice of the PSU until I started reading a while ago about all the different quality issues etc.

I have done some digging and there appears to be a lot of conflicting advice or information about PSU's.

From what I have read one of the most important things to consider is the amps on the 12v rail (or something like that). I thought I had my head around this with a 28A on the 12V being a good thing but then there are the PSU's which have dual 12v rails which have me a little confused.

Any other important things to consider would be gratefully accepted. As would be any brands to stay away from or that are considered reliable etc. I have been looking at AcBel, Excel (rubbish from what I understand), Icute, Raidmax, Silverstone, Task and Thermaltake (overpriced from what I have read). Are Task any good or does it necessarily follow that cheap = nasty when it comes to PSU?

Cheers all.

495894 2006-11-01 21:24:00 Yes - I thought I had figured that much out. I wonder what the one is like in my case. It came with it when I bought it. Tukapa (62)

495896 2006-11-01 21:35:00 Most probably some crap 300 or 350w PSU if it was in the case .

Most of the cases I've brought have never had 400w or higher in them .

I usually tell the shop to remove it, and I buy my own . They take $30-40 off it . And that goes towards the PSU I buy .

I brought 2 Thermaltake 430w's for $60 each .

They were pretty cheap coz they had no fancy packaging . Just the PSU as is .

And these have SATA connectors (the other PSU I had, uses a SATA / molex adapter), and it kept on coming off, or coming out of the adapter . And the system wouldnt boot till I connected it again .

Was looking at this case/psu combo.

Off to see if I can find more info about the quality of the included PSU.

495898 2006-11-01 22:17:00 Check this (forums.overclockers.co.nz).

Similar to what Terry posted, but done locally.

The low end thermaltakes, in particular the 430w's are very good value at around $60-$70, but I wouldnt use it in anything other than your average SOHO machine. Dont touch the highend Thermaltake PSU's they ant worth the price. If in doubt buy an Enermex or Silverstone PSU, theyre the best money can buy.

Dont buy case/PSU combo theyre a shower of ****. With the one exception being Antec, but there not cheap and dont normally come with very powerful PSU's. Buy a case and PSU seperately.
