2006-11-01 02:17:00 | Interesting, as I read the same pureoverclock article as reason NOT to get the 512Mb card, as there was so little difference between the two, especially at the lower res that I will be using. Also, this will be the last upgrade this machine gets, as in a years time all the stuff I have now will be obsolete. | craig.b (6571) | |
2006-11-01 06:14:00 | It all depends on the chipset and the game you intend to play. If you buy a 7600GT or something of equal or less specs dont waste money on the extra 256mb of ram, you'll never be able to play modern games at high enough resolutions to justify the extra cost. Once you make the jump to a 7900GT the extra memory starts to become a viable option. It also depends on how often you intend to upgrade, on a higher end card you intent to keep for a while its definately a good idea to get the extra ram. Seeing as your buying outdated tech for a outdated system save yourself the money and buy the card with 256mb of memory. Chances are the rest of the system will hold you back before the lack of extra video memory does, and when you upgrade you'll have to get a new video card.

2006-11-01 10:18:00 | Try playing Flight Simulator Deluxe without heaps of graphics memory and a good vid and CPU. I have a 3.6 overclocked P4 with a NVidia 6800GTX with 512MB and 1GB Dual channel ram and 2x250GB as Raid0 and even with heaps turned down it struggles to get 5 to 15 fps. They are talking of Intel Duo 6600 and NVidia 7900GTX with at least 512MB and better with 1GB DDR3 video ram and 2GB main memory to get it going good. Looks like some more money to spend You cant be serious?, How old is the game, what res are you playing, are use using AA/AF, change in the driver so its NOT application controlled, as that frame rate doesnt sound right?

Also, this will be the last upgrade this machine gets, as in a years time all the stuff I have now will be obsolete. It is a good non-biased article and the "final word" is where it gets down to business, combined with an eye to the next generation of games. I also agree on slower GPU's, 512Mb is not worth it as the GPU can't render the high resolution and higher quality textures anyway. """In every game under different testing methods we saw that 512MB does make a difference, and in some cases a large one. Quake 4’s performance increases in Ultra mode were the most impressive here, but HL2: Lost Coast also showed some credible boosts. F.E.A.R was not so impressive but in real world testing 512Mb showed its worth, especially on a system with 1GB RAM.""' |

2006-11-06 08:27:00 | get a 7600GS for $200-300 or a $7600GT for $300-450 Both come in AGP versions, 256MB standard (only option iirc)
